Nagashima Spa Land: A Thrill-Seeker’s Paradise
Nagashima Spa Land, located technically in Mie Prefecture, is one of Japan’s premier amusement parks, known for its world-record-breaking roller coasters and extensive entertainment offerings. We have decided to include it in this guide, because it’s only 40 minutes away by car from Nagagoya. The park attracts thrill-seekers from all over the world with its diverse range of rides, from heart-pounding coasters to family-friendly attractions.
Record-Breaking Roller Coasters
• Steel Dragon 2000
Holding the Guinness World Record for the longest steel roller coaster, Steel Dragon 2000 boasts a track length of 2,479 meters (8,133 feet). With a towering height of 97 meters and speeds reaching up to 153 km/h (95 mph), it offers a breathtaking experience with stunning views of the surrounding area.
• Hakugei
As Asia’s first hybrid roller coaster, Hakugei combines a wooden structure with a steel track, offering a smooth yet thrilling ride experience with multiple inversions and steep drops, making it a favorite among adrenaline junkies.
• Arashi
This 4D coaster provides an unpredictable ride as seats rotate independently, creating a dynamic and disorienting experience where no two rides feel the same.

Yuami no Shima Spa
Beyond the amusement park, visitors can unwind at Yuami no Shima, a large open-air hot spring facility featuring various baths, saunas, and relaxation areas inspired by traditional Japanese onsen culture. The Spa can be reached with a direct free shuttle bus that drives to and from the amusement park.

Nagoya City Center
Nagoya’s city center boasts a blend of traditional culture and modern attractions, with highlights including the Osu Shopping District, Osu Kannon Temple, Chubu Electric Power MIRAI TOWER, and the surrounding Hisaya Odori Park.
Osu Shopping District and Osu Kannon Temple
Adjacent to the shopping district is Osu Kannon Temple, a significant Buddhist temple with historical importance. The temple hosts antique markets on the 18th and 28th of each month, attracting both locals and tourists. 
Chubu Electric Power MIRAI TOWER and Hisaya Odori Park
Formerly known as Nagoya TV Tower, the Chubu Electric Power MIRAI TOWER stands at 180 meters and was Japan’s first consolidated radio tower, completed in 1954. Nishio The Capital of Matcha!
Nishio City, located in Aichi Prefecture, has earned a distinguished reputation as a premier producer of matcha, often referred to as the “Capital of Matcha.” This esteemed status is attributed to its significant contribution to Japan’s matcha production, accounting for approximately 20% of the nation’s output. The region’s favorable climate, fertile soil enriched by the Yahagi River, and traditional cultivation methods contribute to the superior quality of Nishio matcha. 
While Uji in Kyoto is historically renowned for its matcha, Nishio’s offerings are celebrated for their vibrant color, rich umami flavor, and smooth texture. Some connoisseurs prefer Nishio matcha for its natural sweetness and balanced taste, which can be attributed to the region’s unique terroir and meticulous production processes.
For those interested in delving deeper into the world of Nishio matcha, the Matcha Museum SAIJOEN Waku Waku offers an immersive experience. Located within the headquarters of Aiya Co. Visitors can participate in hands-on activities such as blending tea leaves, grinding them using traditional stone mills, and preparing matcha tea.

We visited the matcha museum Saijoen WAKUWAKU, where you can:
-🏭Have a tour of the matcha factory and see what happens behind the scenes when matcha is made
-🍃Make your own customized matcha: make a blend of leaves as you prefer (adjust ratios of strong umami leaves to deep color leaves, and light aroma leaves) and start milling the leaves into powder. You can see in the video that I’m struggling and using my whole body to mill the leaves. We had no idea it required such strength and time!
-🍵Drink the matcha you made! You get to prepare the drink as it’s traditionally made, and pair it with a wagashi (Japanese sweet).

Isn’t it crazy? If this was in Kyoto/Tokyo, it could easily be 5x this price! And nothing beats the beauty of a quiet, untainted, authentic place like this. The popular cafe next to the museum, Saijoen, is a must go after the museum tour, to have the BEST matcha dessert! They have a wide variety of regular and limited desserts, as well as teas..
We had their matcha montblanc which was everything we want in a matcha dessert! Why is it not as famous as Uji matcha?
Uji or Shizuoka may be famous for their green tea, however, Nishio specializes in Matcha. And their philosophy opposes today’s fast and cheap mass production! So cultivation and production of tea is practiced all locally from the beginning to the end. This purest form of the single origin for Matcha is rare both Japan and in the world!

Tokoname Pottery Footpath
The Tokoname Pottery Footpath, located in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, is a renowned walking trail that showcases the city’s rich ceramic heritage. Tokoname is recognized as one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, with a pottery tradition dating back to the 12th century. Taking a stroll through the town can be down choosing between two different paths, which we describe below. These are completely free and can easily be accessed by following a map you can grab at the local station.
The footpath offers two main courses:
• Course A: Approximately 1.6 kilometers long, this route takes about an hour to complete. It features iconic sites such as the Takita Family Residence, Dokanzaka Hill, and the Noborigama (Toei Kiln). 
• Course B: Spanning about 4 kilometers, this route takes around two and a half hours. It includes attractions like the INAX Live Museum and the Tokoname Tou no Mori Museum, offering a deeper exploration into the city’s pottery history. 
As you walk along the footpath, you’ll encounter brick chimneys, old kilns, and walls adorned with ceramic pipes and shochu bottles, reflecting the city’s industrial past. The narrow, winding streets are lined with traditional black-walled workshops, galleries, and cafes, providing a nostalgic atmosphere. 
A notable highlight is the giant “maneki-neko” (beckoning cat) face, known as Tokonyan, which has become a symbol of the city.

Yuya Onsen + climbing 14 steps to a historical temple + my favorite guest house
Yuya Onsen, located in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, is a historic hot spring town nestled along the Itajiki River in the scenic Horaikyo Valley. With over 1,300 years of history, Yuya Onsen is known for its mineral-rich waters that are believed to have healing properties. The tranquil atmosphere of the area makes it a perfect retreat for relaxation, offering visitors a chance to unwind while enjoying the stunning natural surroundings.
One of the main attractions near Yuya Onsen is Horaiji Shrine, a sacred site located on Mount Horaiji, which has long been a place of spiritual significance. The shrine and the adjacent Horaiji Temple, founded in 703 by the monk Rishu, were established as a center for Shugendo, a form of Japanese mountain asceticism blending Buddhism and indigenous beliefs. Over the centuries, the area has drawn pilgrims and warriors seeking blessings, and today it remains a popular destination for those looking to experience its historical and spiritual atmosphere. The mountain itself is adorned with ancient cedar trees, moss-covered stone steps, and breathtaking views.
Guest House Hoo! Hoo! is a charming accommodation located in the Yuya-Onsen area of Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture. To reach Mount Horaiji from Yuya-Onsen Station, you can take a local bus that leads to the starting point of the hike. However, there are very few buses each day—around 3 to 4 in each direction. The owner of Guest House Hoo! Hoo! is known for being very helpful and can provide you with maps and details on the bus schedules. In some cases, he has even offered guests a ride to the base of the mountain to avoid waiting for the bus.
