Melnik: The Wine Destination

Melnik: The Wine Destination

Melnik - the smallest town in Bulgaria with a population of just under 400 people and one road - is the ideal weekend getaway destination. Tucked away between sandy hills and surrounded by sun-kissed wineries, it's much appreciated by wine drinkers.

🗺️ First Things First: Getting There

Driving to Melnik from Sofia take about 2 hrs. Most of the drive is down the highway from Sofia to Thessaloniki. The road offers a great panoramic view of Rila and Pirin mountains, especially if you set out early in the morning or at sunset.

Just before you reach Melnik, look out for freshly fathered figs sold by a local merchant (August-September). You’ll notice his small shop on the left hand side before one of the last turns towards Melnik. The figs are delicious and no chemicals are used for spraying them. A small box of figs costs approx. 3 EUR.

💡Worth Keeping In Mind

ATMs & Cash

The one and only ATM in Melnik was removed once the Covid pandemic broke out. So bear in mind that you’ll need to have enough cash on you for any expenses. And with that said, sometimes card payments tend not to go through due to poor network coverage. In case you will end up needing an ATM, you’ll have to drive back towards the highway and head towards the closes gas station. Worst case scenario: you’ll find a Lukoil gas station just before the border with Greece (approximately a 15-20 min drive).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I was barely a week old when my mom took me on a plane for the very first time. And it's been hard to stay off one every since. Hi! I'm Rayna - a native Bulgarian that grew up in Poland. I was 16 when we relocated (back) to Bulgaria with my family. That's when I started discovering my country, little by little feeling those patriotic roots inside grow. A 3rd culture kid, traveling is in my DNA. As of this day, I've been to 33 countries around the world. With so much more to explore, I am trying to find a healthy balance between between traveling abroad and getting to know my own country. My friends have told me numerous times to get into the tourism business given my passion for traveling. Oftentimes I spend go on endlessly talking about Bulgaria with friends and not only. I'd be happy to take you on a journey to discover Bulgaria by sharing my experiences with you.
