2 days of adventure in Liechtenstein
Day 1
Start off your journey in Liechtenstein by marking it down on your actual passport! Head to the Liechtenstein Center to get your passport stamp for 3 euros. The center also offers other local souvenirs.
Wander through the charming streets of Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein and make your way to the Vaduz castle. Although it is not open for public since it is the residency of the prince of Liechtenstein, the trail up to the castle offers some scenic views of Liechtenstein as you ascend your way up. If you are not that much of a nature enthusiast you can spend the afternoon wandering through the many museums Vaduz offers and learn about the history of this tiny but yet charming country. If you are more of an adventure seeker head to the next destination.
For your first afternoon in Liechtenstein, head to the ski-resort village of Malbun. In winter you can enjoy some skiing but this location is equally captivating in summer, Boasting endless green landscapes nestled between the rugged peaks of the surrounding mountain ranges, this destination is every hiker's or nature lover's dream.
The stunning alpine peak standing at 2,104 meters, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including lush green valleys, rugged alpine ridges, and neighboring peaks in both Liechtenstein and Switzerland. The trail passes through beautiful alpine meadows and rocky terrain, showcasing the pristine nature of the region. The hike to Schönberg is moderately challenging, with some steeper sections that require good physical condition. It typically takes around 4-5 hours round trip, depending on your pace and chosen route, making it ideal for experienced hikers or fit beginners seeking adventure. The journey can start at Sassfürkle, near the Malbun ski resort area, or from the Sareis chairlift station, which allows you to begin at a higher elevation, reducing the overall ascent. Both trails are well-marked and part of the larger hiking network in Malbun.
For the early evening head to ruggeller ried and locate the Old Rhine Bridge which connects Vaduz, Liechtenstein with Sevelen, Switzerland. This historic wooden structure was built in 1901 and spans the Rhine River. It is the only remaining wooden bridge in the region and is now a pedestrian and cyclist crossing, offering picturesque views of the river and surrounding mountains. Get your shot crossing the border inside it!
Enjoy your dinner and rest up for your second day in Liechtenstein.
Day 2
Start off your second day by heading to the chair lift station which will take you up to Sareis mountain. Chair lifts cost about 10euros per person for one way. Trails from this mountain also lead to Schonberg mountain. However, after enjoying the views the chair lift ride offers you, you can also attempt the Swing Trail.
The Swing Trail is a scenic hiking route that combines stunning alpine views with a fun experience. The trail is dotted with swings strategically placed at viewpoints, allowing hikers to enjoy panoramic vistas while taking a relaxing break. The hike is relatively easy to moderate, suitable for families and casual hikers, with well-marked paths and gentle slopes. It takes around 2-3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and time spent at each swing. The trail ends in the Malbun valley past cow farms and some lamas.
For the afternoon head to Ganglesee lake and enjoy an open campfire or a relaxing picnic by the lake to recharge for the next destination.
Later in the afternoon head to Triesenberg and enjoy a hike in the company of a lama. The folks at Lama & Alpakahof Triesenberg will organize everything for you. You can also compliment your hike with some cheese fondue or a BBQ in the midst of the forests.
If you haven't ate already you can enjoy your evening meal in the municipality of Triesenberg or a grab a refreshing drink or coffee while wandering around.
Accomodations
For our 2-night stay in Liechtenstein we based ourselves in picturesque Malbun. Accommodation in Liechtenstein, like all other amenities such as food and activities is not on the cheaper end so make sure to choose your accommodation well in advance. We stayed at Hotel Galina. Price without breakfast for 2 people for a 2 night stay was 146.50 euros per person. The views from our room and the luxury and cleanliness of the room make it well worth the price, especially compared to other options in the area.
