Algarve: From West to East
Sagres
Sagres is a more quiet alternative to the resort and tourist populated towns. However, you are sure to still get a taste of the local culture and step your foot in some marvelous sandy beaches. Sagres is home to the Fortaleza (fortress) and Cabo de São Vicente, which was once believed to be the "end of the world." If you are interested in visiting this small, quaint town but want to stay in a more populated location, Sagres is a short car ride from Lagos.
Lagos
Personally one of my favorites, Lagos is a historic beach town graced with great food, cobblestone streets, and countless activities. Lagos is known for some of the most famous beaches in the world covered in rock formations and caves, including Ponta da Piedade which is considered one of the best beaches in the world by Huffington Post. You can visit the Old Town for some shopping and nightlife, or the marina for some local cuisine by the sea. There are endless water activities in Lagos, from kayaking through the beach caves, a catamaran ride, or boat tours. It's also a short distance to the popular Benagil Cave and beach which is a MUST see (see Portimão below).
Portimão
Another great destination for beach time and relaxation, Portimão has it all. From golfing to swimming, shopping or eating, you are sure to find something to do. A must-see is the Benagil Cave and beach. There are many boat and kayak tours that allow you to get close, or a short swim for those who are more daring.
Silves
For those looking to explore more history, Silves is an ancient Moorish city with a well-preserved castle and ruins. A bit quieter than the popular beach towns, but nevertheless full of endless activities. In August the city holds its annual Medieval Festival which will transport you back to the ancient Arabic days.
Albufeira
Albufeira is more lively for those looking for a "party" destination in Algarve with many popular beach bars and clubs, but nonetheless a great location for families as well. With an endless selection of beaches, water activities, and a MiniGolf Adventure Park, you are sure to find something to either relax or explore. Albufeira is also a popular location for many dolphin watching tours.
Vilamoura
Not actually a town, Vilamoura is a resort-area in central Algarve. This area is more modernized rather than historical, but still captures the beauty of Portugal. Situated on a marina, you can eat at one of the endless options of restaurants and bars overlooking the water. You can still tan and swim at one of the many beaches or take a day trip to a golf course, waterpark, or the city of Loulé.
Faro
Faro is the capital of the Algarve region and lies on the eastern side of the region. The Faro International Airport is located here and is the only airport in Algarve. Besides great beaches, the architecture is breathtaking with colorful buildings dating back to the 13th century. You can take a cheap ferry and visit the deserted Faro islands and Ria Formosa Natural Park.
Tavira
Another popular location where the Ria Formosa lagoons reach is Tavira. Tavira's seductive town shows off both history and relaxation with its beaches. You can visit churches, a castle, fortress, Roman bridge, waterfall, and more. You will start to see some architectural influences from the Moorish reign of the area.
......There are still hundreds of other options in the Algarve region. Be sure to do your research beforehand. But, no matter where you stay, you are sure to love your time there!
