Eat in Interesting Places

There is a joke that traditional Greek breakfast is a cigarette and coffee but for this food tour, you may actually want to skip breakfast and just grab a freddo espresso. Each of the places on this list are historic and charming restaurants that have great food and great character.

Early Lunch

Diporto
@jacksonhouse
Iconic Greek taverna with roots in the 1800s that always runs out of food before it runs out of customers.

The main reason the food tour starts at Diporto is due to the demand. If you do not show up for lunch around 11am, there is no guarantee that you will get a table. This unassuming taverna is below street level and has no menu beyond looking at what the owner has prepared that day and choosing what you want. Diporto is also famous for its "retsina" which is a uniquely Greek wine that is served chilled with taverna fare.

Sweets

Krinos (est.1923)

The great thing about Diporto is that you will leave full but with room for dessert. Take the short walk (about 5 min.) directly to Krinos or walk around the Athens Central Market for a while before heading to Krinos for Loukoumades. These fried Greek treats are a little bit like cinnamon and honey-covered donuts but that description does not quite do them justice.

Snacks

VENETI BAKERY 1948 NEON Omonoia

To break the sweetness of the loukoumades, we will finish the food tour with some savory Greek pastries at Veneti Bakery in Omonoia. There are several cases of sweet and savory pastries to peruse but I recommend trying some traditional pastries like spanakopita (spinach pie) or tiropita (cheese pie) that you can find at different bakeries around the city.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I like being in new places more than the process of travel. Whenever I go to a new place, I like to spend some time there so that I can learn about the history and the culture. The best case scenario is to make local friends so that you can learn about the country from their perspective. Some of my cross-cultural travel highlights include: meeting my wife (and learning French because of her) and having all of my stereotypes shattered by my Middle Eastern friends. My desire to better understand my friends and their world led me to study Arabic and attend graduate school at the School of Oriental and African Studies - University of London where I learned about the history and politics of the modern Middle East. I am now passionate about helping people from the West discover the beauty of the Middle East.
