London's West End is a world-renowned entertainment district, synonymous with the pinnacle of theatrical excellence. Nestled in the heart of the UK's capital, it boasts a dazzling array of historic theaters, each adorned with their own unique charm. From timeless classics to cutting-edge productions, the West End stages an eclectic mix of plays, musicals, and performances that cater to every taste and preference.

What Show Should You See?

Here I hope to give you ideas of what show to pick, I'll list my top three current shows from different categories.

My top three show

1 - Sunset Boulevard playing at the Savoy Theatre

A classic musical that delves into the dark and glamorous world of Hollywood. It follows the faded silent film star Norma Desmond and her complex relationship with a struggling screenwriter, Joe Gillis. The story explores themes of ambition, fame, and obsession, set against the backdrop of the iconic Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.

This current production implements a lot of live recording and minimalistic staging. The best way to describe it is cool and edgy. I highly recommend seeing this show if you're interested in seeing a twist on a classic.

Ticket tip: For cheap tickets they have a lottery, it open one week before the performance you hope to attend. I ended up buying the cheapest ticket, and having it being upgraded to premium for only 20 pounds at the box office half hour before the show - obviously there's no guarantee for this but always worth a try.

Savoy Theatre
@mirandathomsen
A classic theatre in the middle of the Strand. I will advise to not sit too far back in the stalls as there is a masive overhang from the balcony, which makes at obstructive view seats. Great views from the first balcony. Sunset Boulevard is currently playing at the Savoy.

2 - Cabaret playing at the playhouse

The musical is set in 1931 Berlin, against the backdrop of the rising Nazi party. The story revolves around the Kit Kat Klub, a decadent nightclub, and its eccentric performers. The narrative intertwines the lives of American writer Cliff Bradshaw, English singer Sally Bowles as the Emcee narrates. This production is bordering immersive, so you have to be up for that.

It will be one of the best things you've ever seen, but it comes with a big price tag as they always cast famous people in it.

Ticket tip: They do have a lottery, but only six winners for each performance, so I would recommend you buy tickets if this is a show you really want to see.

Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre
@mirandathomsen
The production team has fully renovated the Playhouse to the mysterious Kit Kat Club, the show being set in the round. Make sure to get there in good times as you don't want to miss the pre show that is happening "everywhere" Cabaret is currently playing here.

3 - National Theater

I guess this is cheating as it's not a specific show, but allow me to share a little insider tip: the National Theater is my go-to for a guaranteed fantastic show. Every visit has left me thoroughly impressed, making it a must-see in my book. With each production running for just about two months, there's a constant influx of fresh, dynamic performances. They typically have three different productions running concurrently, offering a delightful array of options. And here's the cherry on top – it's remarkably budget-friendly, making it an accessible treat for theater enthusiasts of all kinds.

Ticket tip: They have a Friday Rush for tickets the following week - see further down to get the full description.

National Theatre
@mirandathomsen
It sits on the southbank of the thames. Inside you'll find a shop full of scripts and different pop up restaurants. Best part there is often a market right outside. Make sure to check out the terraces they're free to enter even if you don't have a ticket, and they give a lovely view of the city.

Top 2 Funniest Shows

1 - Book of Mormon Playing at the Prince of Waves

The show follows two young Mormon missionaries as they embark on a mission to Uganda, where they encounter various challenges and comedic situations.

It's a hilarious, but don't bring the kids, and be okay with swearing and be ready to get offended quite a few times. It is one of the few show that still do a in person lottery.

Prince of Wales Theatre
@mirandathomsen
I would say it is one of the smaller theaters, but it has quite a spacious bar. But it's not the type of venue where you absolutely have to be there early. Its right by Leister Square and chinatown so lots of things to see and do by the theater. The Book of Mormon is currently playing at the Prince of wales.

2 - Play that goes wrong playing at Duchess theatre

It's a classic Agatha Christie type of play that goes horribly wrong. I don't want to spoil the show, but it's very british and hilarious. All I'll say it goes, so horribly wrong.

Ticket tip: this show tends to be quite budget friendly which is good as it doesn't offer a lottery- or rush-tickets. The venue is small enough to be able to sit far away and still have a good view.

Duchess Theatre
@mirandathomsen
It's a small venue which helps it feel very intimate. Be sure to check out the outsides as its full of jokes and who knows maybe Leonardo DiCaprio will be in it - please note he does not perform in the show Sunday through Friday or Saturday. (The Play that goes wrong)

Top 3 Family Friendly Shows

1 - Matilda The Musical Playing at the Cambridge Theatre

I've had to listen to it over a 100 times as I worked front of House for it, and I still love it. It's also a very British show, so great inside to the culture - here I'm off course thinking about the school uniforms and accents not the harsher themes in the show.

The show is a beloved stage adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic children's novel, "Matilda." Set in a gloomy English town, the story revolves around Matilda Wormwood, a precocious and highly intelligent young girl with neglectful parents. Despite her challenging circumstances, Matilda discovers she possesses extraordinary telekinetic powers. She faces adversity at school, particularly from the tyrannical headmistress, Miss Trunchbull.

A recently released movie adaptation is now available on Netflix, providing a wonderful opportunity to preview the content and gauge its suitability for your children. This can also serve as a helpful way for non-English speakers to follow along with the story. Ultimately, it's about ensuring a positive and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Ticket tip: The show tends to be more budget-friendly outside of school holiday periods, but rest assured that even from the back seats, it's an immensely enjoyable experience. If you have the means to splurge on stall seats, I highly recommend them. A lot of fun shenanigans and antics take place right in the aisles down in the stalls, providing an up-close thrill.

For those seeking a more cost-effective option, the theater offers a lottery on their website, offering a chance to secure tickets at a discounted rate. It's a great way to experience the magic of the show without paying full price.

Cambridge Theatre
@mirandathomsen
This venue has a fantastic location so make sure to get there in time to get treat or enjoy a meal in the seven dials food market across the theatre. Inside the theatre you'll find letters spelling all sorts of things so it's super fun to come early if you have kids. (Matilda: the Musical)

2 - Frozen Playing at the Royal Drury Lane.

This spectacular musical brings to life the heartwarming tale of the two royal sisters, Elsa and Anna, set against a backdrop of a magical kingdom. With dazzling special effects and memorable songs, "Frozen" delivers an impressive theatrical experience for audiences of all ages.

It's very impressive and you definitely get a lot for your money when it comes to special effects. Its also quite short, so if you're unsure wether or not your kids can sit still for a full length show, then this is probably the way to go.

Ticket tip: They do something call Magical Disney Mondays for tickets the following week - see further down to get the full description.

This is an iconic venue, definitely make sure to come early it's very impressive inside. They also have different bars and an afternoon tea room, which is super cute and delicious. (Frozen)

3 - Mrs Doubtfire: The Musical playing at the Shaftsbury Theatre

 This show is a heartwarming and comedic stage adaptation of the popular 1993 film. The story follows Daniel Hillard, a struggling actor going through a divorce, who concocts a plan to spend more time with his children. He transforms himself into a kind-hearted and nurturing Scottish housekeeper named Mrs. Doubtfire. Hilarity ensues as Daniel juggles his dual identities while trying to win back the affections of his ex-wife and reconnect with his kids.

I believe 'Mrs. Doubtfire: The Musical' is one of those rare shows that strikes a chord with both kids and adults, albeit in different ways, yet with equal significance. It's a production that effortlessly balances heartwarming moments with uproarious humor - and if you've been keeping track, you'd notice there were only two in the funniest category, this is the third;)

Whether you're out for a delightful family evening or simply an adult seeking a dose of pure, unadulterated fun, this musical promises an unforgettable experience. It's a testament to the show's versatility and the universal appeal of its themes. Don't miss out on what's bound to be a fantastic night!

Ticket tip:  They offer Rush tickets on Today tix or you can try for there day seats.

Top 3 Iconic Shows

1 - Guys and Dolls Playing at the Bridge.

An absolute classic musical comedy set in the vibrant world of New York City's underground gambling scene. Filled with colorful characters, witty humor, and memorable songs, it follows the intersecting stories of high-rolling gamblers, their love interests, and a pious mission worker.

This new production promises a dynamic and immersive experience, bringing to life the lively streets of 1940s New York - Literally. The stage moves and it's possible to stand for the production which gives a very immersive experience that I would highly recommend. It truly is a party you don't want to miss.

Ticket tip: They have a rush on Today Tix. You absolutely have to stand its so much fun.

2 - Les Miserables Playing at the Sondheim Theater

Its a legendary musical that has left an icredible mark on the world of theatre. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, it tells the gripping tale of love, redemption, and revolution. The story revolves around an ex-convict named Jean Valjean, who seeks to rebuild his life while being pursued by the relentless Inspector Javert.

The show has played on the West End since the eighties, and it's for a reason. It's one of the greatest musical scores ever written which is why a musical about the french revolution is still here. I highly recommend it, but be warned it's long and operatic (meaning there is no speaking only singing.

Ticket tip: There isn't really one for this show. They do however offer standingroom at a very affordable price when the show is sold out.

Formerly known as the Queens Theater, it changed name after a masive renovation. Be sure to check out the Les Mis artwork on the side of the theatre. (Les Miserables)

3 - Hamilton Playing at the Victoria Palace Theatre

The groundbreaking musical took the world by storm. Created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, it reimagines the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, through a diverse and contemporary lens. The production seamlessly blends hip-hop, R&B, and traditional show tunes to tell the story of Hamilton's rise from humble beginnings to becoming a pivotal figure in American history.

This cultural phenomenon is definitely not one to miss. It is however very long and very wordy so your English has to quite good to fully enjoy this show.

Ticket tip: They offer a 10 pound lottery through Today Tix.

Victoria Palace Theatre
@mirandathomsen
It was beautifully renovated before Hamilton moved into the venue. Located in the heart of the Victoria area, so plenty of things to do and see before the show. (Hamilton)

2 - Just for One Day: A New Musical (About Live Aid)

3 - Mean Girls

4 - Hadestown

Where To Sit?

While premium seats offer an unparalleled experience, they can come with a hefty price tag. Fortunately, opting for seats towards the back in the center can still provide an excellent view at a more reasonable cost. Another budget-friendly option is to consider restricted view seats. These are typically the most affordable in the venue and, in many cases, offer a decent view. However, it's crucial to note that the experience can vary depending on the specific theatre layout.

To ensure you're comfortable with your seat selection, I recommend using Seat Planner, a helpful website that provides visual representations of the view from different seats in the theatre. This way, you can make an informed decision that suits both your preferences and your budget.

Just look up the show or venue here: https://seatplan.com

How To Score Cheap Tickets!

In-person Day Seats: Arrive early at the box office in the morning. Not all shows offer this, and sometimes the seats may be standing room only. Make sure you're comfortable with the offer.

Standing Room: Some shows offer standing room tickets if they are sold out, but be prepared to stand for the entire performance.

Lottery Tickets: Enter a lottery a week or so before the show for a chance to secure discounted tickets.

Rush Tickets: In the UK, this term mainly refers to when tickets become available online early in the morning.

Magical Mondays (For Disney Shows): Every Monday at noon, 30 pound tickets for the week's performances are released. https://www.disneytickets.co.uk/disney-day-seats-tickets

National Theatre Friday Rush: A large selection of seats for the following week's performances is released at 1 pm on Fridays for only 10 pounds.

Today Tix: Download the app before you go to London. They offer a wide range of discounted seats and sometimes have flash sales for 24 hours. They also provide access to most rush and lottery seats.

Theatre Monkey: I highly recommend checking out Theatre Monkey, a website that provides an overview of shows and the types of discounted seats available.

Plan Ahead: Make sure you understand the ticketing method you're using to score cheap tickets a bit in advance to ensure you don't miss out on any opportunities.

GOOD LUCK🤞

Traditions of the West End

Interval Ice Cream: Treat yourself to an interval ice cream, even if they can be a bit pricey. It's a fun tradition unique to UK theaters that adds to the experience.

Meeting Performers: Some shows offer the chance to greet the performers and express your appreciation for their hard work at the stage door. However, remember that this is not a contractual obligation for the actors, and they may not always be available or up for it. Be respectful of their time and preferences. Remember, you've paid to see the show, not necessarily to meet the actors at the stage door.

Programs vs. Playbills (for Americans): Unlike in the US where Playbills are usually free, in the UK, you'll need to purchase a program. Many shows offer two types - one with more pictures and one with more detailed information. Make sure you get the one that suits your preference.

Make sure to visit the Theatre Cafe - they serve a wide range of delightful theatre-inspired drinks, and the decor is equally impressive. It's a must-see for any theatre enthusiast!
