Turkish Food: What to Try
Exploring Istanbul in just three days is an incredible experience, and with such delicious Turkish cuisine, hunger won't be an issue. Turkish cuisine is renowned for its rich flavors, fresh ingredients, and diverse dishes influenced by both Mediterranean and Middle Eastern culinary traditions. So, what gastronomic delights should you try while visiting Istanbul?
Kebabs: From juicy skewers of shish kebab (grilled meat) to doner kebab (rotating spit meat). Pair them with rice, grilled vegetables, and traditional bread like lavash or pide.
Meze: Meze are small appetizer dishes served before the main meal. They include a variety of cold and hot dishes such as hummus (made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini (sesame seed paste), olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and various spices like cumin and paprika), tabbouleh (salad made with finely chopped parsley, tomatoes, onions, mint, and bulgur wheat, dressed with olive oil, lemon juice, and salt), stuffed grape leaves (dolma), and eggplant salad (patlıcan salatası).
Baklava: This indulgent dessert consists of layers of thin pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with honey or syrup.
Turkish Breakfast: Known as kahvaltı, Turkish breakfast is a hearty spread of cheeses, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, jams, honey, bread, and eggs. It's typically enjoyed with çay (Turkish tea) and provides a delicious start to the day.
Lahmacun and Pide: Lahmacun is a thin, crispy flatbread topped with minced meat, vegetables, and spices, while pide is a boat-shaped bread filled with various toppings like cheese, meat, or vegetables. Both are popular street foods and are perfect for a quick bite.
Künefe: Turkish dessert made with shredded phyllo dough, called kadayıf, filled with unsalted cheese, typically from Hatay, and soaked in sweet syrup. It's often served warm and topped with crushed pistachios or walnuts.
Turkish Coffee: A symbol of Turkish hospitality, Turkish coffee is strong, rich, and traditionally brewed in a special pot called a cezve. Served in small cups, it's thick and unfiltered, with grounds settling at the bottom. Don't forget to enjoy it with a piece of Turkish delight!
