Local's Guide to Grand Rapids

Named the best Sculpture Park in the United States by readers of USA Today in 2023 and 2024, this amazing park is a must-visit. There is so much to see and do. You can spend the day viewing a collection of 200 sculptures, walking through the indoor and outdoor gardens, or attending one of the special exhibitions they hold throughout the year. There is something for everyone!

This museum is a great place to spend a couple hours. It has a planetarium where you can watch a show, a lot of interesting and informative exhibits about Michigan and Grand Rapids history, and a beautiful carousel from 1928 that you can ride on.

When threatened with destruction in the 1960s, Heritage Hill's residents banded together to create a plan to save their neighborhood. The result is the largest concentration of 19th and early 20th-century houses in Michigan. It is a wonderful spot to walk around and enjoy the history and architecture of Grand Rapids.

Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Meyer May house in 1908. It was restored in the 1980s and now has everything from the light fixtures to the carpets as Wright designed. Schedule a tour through the website and visit this beautifully restored example of a Wright Prairie house.

Ford is the only president to come from Michigan and this museum teaches you all about him and his legacy. In addition to its permanent exhibits about his life and achievements, it also has temporary exhibits about related topics. The museum includes a life size Oval Office and Cabinet Room!

Kids love this museum that has interactive exhibits that cater to a wide range of ages. It is closed some days and closes before 5 on others so make sure to check the times before going.

Take a stroll across Grand Rapids' iconic Blue Bridge! This vibrant pedestrian walkway, painted a sky blue, was originally a railroad bridge built in 1892. It lights up at night and gives a great view of Grand Rapids during the day.

This scenic park offers stunning river views and green space. Ah-Nab-Awen was once a Native American village, and the park honors this past with artwork and markers. It's a perfect spot for a peaceful stroll or a picnic, while learning a bit about Grand Rapids' unique history.

This vibrant red sculpture by Alexander Calder is a beloved landmark. A must-see for art enthusiasts and anyone seeking a unique photo opportunity.

The GRAM offers a welcoming atmosphere with collections spanning from Renaissance to modern art. The GRAM also features special exhibitions.

Rosa Parks Circle is a vibrant hub in the heart of Grand Rapids. In summer, enjoy free concerts or grab lunch from food trucks. In the winter, there is an ice skating rink.

These pictures do not do it justice! Even if you do not stay in this hotel, I highly recommend walking around the lobby. Built in 1913, this historic hotel should be on your list to check out.

The JW Marriott is a luxurious place to stay while in Grand Rapids. This hotel also has a spa, fitness center, and pool.

Restaurants, shops, and attractions are within walking distance. The hotel even has a skywalk connected to Van Andel Arena for events. There is an indoor pool, gym, and on-site restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Many guests praise the friendly staff, clean rooms, and comfortable beds at the Courtyard.

Situated atop the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, MDRD has amazing views and delicious food. Stop at the bar for a quick drink and to check out the views, or reserve a meal for an amazing take on Spanish cuisine. Don't forget dessert! MDRD also has artfully prepared desserts that you will want to check out.

Great restaurant that focuses on meat and whiskey. It has a walled patio that is fun to sit on in the summer. It does not take reservations, but does have a wait list that you can join. It is very popular, so if you are planning to go at a busy time, be prepared to wait. The food is work waiting for though!

Pizza flights! It is so fun to try a variety of different pizzas and grab a beer from their brewery at this casual baseball themed brewery. Open for lunch and dinner.

In the JW Marriott Hotel. This is a great place for an upscale, romantic dinner.

I have had out of town visitors tell me that this is the best mac and cheese they have ever had. Its casual, open for lunch and dinner, and has special dishes on the weekend.

This hip taco and margarita spot is a favorite among visitors. Their Taco De Papas Verde is a vegetarian favorite of mine. They are open for lunch and dinner and also serve brunch on the weekends.

Mentioned in an list of the New York Times' "Best American Dishes of 2023," this is a Korean and Japanese takeout restaurant that is very popular.
