Destination: Big Sur

This is a map of all of my favorite spots in Big Sur, California including places to stay, viewpoints, hikes, dining, and more. Use this guide to know where to camp above the clouds, what stops to make along Hwy 1, and where to stretch your legs on the trails. Unlocking this guide will give you lifetime access to this map, including updates I will make each time I return. If you find this information helpful, any tips are appreciated for my work :)

Where to Stay

Pfeiffer Big Sur Campground
@michaela
This campground is located in central Big Sur amid the redwoods. It has full amenities including bathrooms, paid showers, picnic tables, trash, & fire pits. Reservations are required for most sites. On weekends they book up pretty far in advance. A beautiful river runs through it & there are hiking trails you can take directly from the campground. There’s also a store & restaurant attached to the Big Sur Lodge at the entrance.

Plasket Ridge Road Dispersed Camping
@michaela
If you’re looking to camp and can’t get an actual campground in Big Sur, or just want some insane views, head up Plasket Ridge Road. As long as there aren’t any signs saying no parking, you can pull off at any of the pull offs that are available off the road and dispersed camp. The entrance to the road is located just past Plaskett Creek Campground if you’re going south on Hwy 1. If you’re lucky, you’ll get some insane cloud inversions at sunset. AWD or 4WD is HIGHLY recommended. The higher you go, the better the sites get. Make sure you practice Leave No Trace. Also, if you hike/drive almost up to the top of the ridge, there is a “campsite” with a large oak tree and a fence behind it that is really just a long piece of wood. Beyond that, there is a short trail to a tree with a swing on it.
