Historic Route 66 | On the road from Chicago to Los Angeles
What is Route 66?
Route 66, also known as the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways in the American highway system. It was once a road of hope for many who left Chicago for the Pacific Coast in search of a better future.
It was 1926 when this amazing highway was opened, which had the task of connecting Chicago and the flows coming from the East Coast with California.
The decline began after World War II, when President Eisenhower decided to completely restructure the Federal Highway system, making them bigger, faster and safer. Little by little, almost all sections of Route 66 were excluded from the new highways.
But despite this, Route 66 remains a popular and world-famous tourist attraction. Many sections of the original road are still drivable, allowing visitors to travel back in time and discover the history and charm of old America.
