Uetliberg
@whereispim
Just outside of Zurich! Perched majestically above the vibrant city of Zurich, Uetliberg offers a serene escape into nature just moments from urban life. As the highest vantage point in the Zurich area, this majestic mountain beckons adventurers and nature lovers alike to explore its scenic trails and panoramic viewpoints. Embark on a leisurely hike through verdant forests and rolling meadows, where wildflowers bloom and birdsong fills the air. Along the way, soak in breathtaking views of Zurich, Lake Zurich, and the distant Swiss Alps, providing a stunning backdrop to your outdoor adventure. At the summit, visitors can marvel at the iconic Uetliberg Tower and enjoy a refreshing beverage at the mountain restaurant while basking in the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Caumasee
@whereispim
The bright green lake in the middle of the mountainous region of Flims in Graubünden is definitely one of my favorite places in Switzerland. Summer here is like heaven. Driving is the easiest way to get here, but a combination of train and bus is also an option. Take a train to Chur, then a bus from the train station. The bus ride takes around an hour and brings you close to the lake, followed by a 10-15 minute walk down to the water. At this lake, you can truly relax. Bring a picnic basket and lay down by the shore, or enjoy a meal at the nearby restaurant. Read a book, take a dip in the crystal-clear water, or rent a paddleboard for some fun on the lake. You can easily spend the whole day here, and then take the bus back the same way you came. For those wanting a bit more activity, there are hiking trails around the lake area to explore.

Oeschinen Lake
@whereispim
Öschinensee is a stunning lake nestled in the Öschinen mountains, located near Kandersteg. To get there, take the train to Kandersteg station, then walk through a quaint village for about 20 minutes until you see signs for the cable car. You can either take the cable car or hike up the mountain (if you prefer a more challenging route). Once you reach the top, it's a 15-minute walk to the lake, and the view is simply breathtaking. I highly recommend hiking to get a panoramic view from above. Behind the restaurant, you'll find the trail leading to Hueber-Oberbergli-Unterbergli. This hike is essential for experiencing the lake’s true beauty. For non-hikers, the initial part of the hike might seem daunting due to the steep elevation and potential slipperiness if it has rained. This first section takes around 40 minutes to an hour, depending on your fitness level. However, once you pass it, you’ll be rewarded with an incredible panoramic view: the rich blue lake below, the imposing Blüemlisalp mountains in front, waterfalls cascading down nearby cliffs, eagles soaring overhead, and possibly even sightings of ibex. The peacefulness of this place, especially on weekdays, is unparalleled. The entire hike around the lake takes about four hours, offering a truly amazing and immersive experience in the heart of the Swiss Alps.

Elm
@whereispim
A small town in Glarus, Elm is known for its charming chalet-style houses. Once you arrive, take the cable car up to Ampachlialp, where you’ll find a large restaurant that hosts traditional music performances on weekends. From there, you can start your hike to Chuebodensee, a serene lake nestled in the mountains. The trail begins easily, almost like a walk in the park, where you'll see cows grazing leisurely. Gradually, the elevation increases, and you’ll start to feel it in your legs. The round trip takes about four hours. The hike is beautiful, beginning with lush forests that transition into open grasslands with small streams as you climb higher. If you're lucky, you might even spot a marmot. The return route is different from the ascent but also leads back to the restaurant. Before taking the cable car back to Elm, consider trying a mountain cart for your descent. This thrilling ride offers a fast and fun way down, though be cautious of the sharp turns. It's an exhilarating end to a day of hiking.

Triftbrücke (Trift Bridge)
@whereispim
Located in the remote town of Gadmen, Switzerland, the Trift Bridge spans 170 meters across the Trift Gorge at a height of 100 meters. Despite its secluded location, this hidden gem offers an unforgettable adventure for those willing to make the journey. Getting to the Trift Bridge is no small feat. From Zurich, I embarked on a 3-hour journey involving three trains, one bus, and one cable car (Zurich-Luzern-Merrigen-Innerkirchen Grimseltor-Triftbahn). Though the trip drained my energy, the anticipation only fueled my excitement. The adventure begins at the Nessental cable car station, where a vibrant red gondola transports you up the mountainside, offering breathtaking views of lush forests, meandering rivers, and cascading waterfalls. The hike to the bridge itself is relatively easy, winding through verdant landscapes with babbling brooks, and typically takes about an hour. However, crossing the bridge is a different story. The gusty winds can be formidable, and the bridge’s slight sway can make the 170-meter journey feel much longer. It’s essential to be considerate of others on the narrow bridge, allowing space for those returning from the opposite side. Once across, the reward is immense. The expansive glacier unfolds before you, a majestic reminder of nature’s grandeur. Yet, it’s sobering to witness the effects of global warming, as parts of the glacier have begun to recede. #StopGlobalWarming For the more adventurous hiker, the journey doesn’t end at the bridge. Following the blue hiking signs, you can continue on, though it’s not for the inexperienced. The trail promises further exploration, though its destination remains a mystery to those unaccustomed to its challenges.

Creux du Van
@whereispim
Nestled in Neuchâtel, Creux du Van is a natural wonder—a towering rock formation carved by water erosion, plunging 150 meters deep. To begin your journey, head to the quaint Noiraigue train station. Be prepared to hunt for the trailhead; signs may not be immediately apparent, requiring a brief stroll from the station to locate them. The trail winds through dense forest, offering a serene ambiance heightened by the gentle patter of rain. Despite the slippery conditions, the lush surroundings teem with life—birds flit among the foliage, adding a melodic soundtrack to your ascent. Upon reaching the summit, prepare to be awestruck by the breathtaking panorama. If you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of an ibex, adding to the allure of the experience. And for those seeking a taste of local flavor, indulge in an authentic absinthe at a rustic restaurant perched atop the rock, adding a touch of tradition to your adventure.

Valle Verzasca
@whereispim
Located in the southern part of Switzerland, in the Italian-speaking region of Ticino, lies a picturesque village nestled amidst a network of meandering rivers. While public transport options may be limited, with the valley not easily accessible by train, buses offer an alternative mode of travel to this idyllic destination. Renowned for its stunning natural beauty, this region gained cinematic fame as the backdrop for the iconic dam featured in the 007 Golden Eye movie. Today, thrill-seekers can experience the ultimate adrenaline rush by bungee jumping off this towering structure, boasting the title of Europe's highest jump at a staggering 220 meters. For those seeking more grounded adventures, hiking through the breathtaking landscape is a popular pastime, while canyoning enthusiasts can explore the many waterfalls that dot the area. While bungee jumping, hiking, and canyoning are favored activities among visitors, there's an unexpected adventure awaiting beneath the surface. In a region where outdoor pursuits reign supreme, scuba diving might seem out of place, but in the Verzasca Valley, it's an extraordinary experience. Certified divers can explore crystal-clear river depths, immersing themselves in an underwater world unlike any other. However, be prepared for the chilly temperatures—the clarity of the water comes at the cost of bone-chilling coldness.
