Distilleries
Of course, one cannot mention Islay without paying homage to its most celebrated export – Scotch whisky. With its eight iconic distilleries, each with its own distinct character and production methods, Islay stands as the undisputed Mecca for whisky enthusiasts. From the smoky and peaty drams to the delicately balanced flavors, a pilgrimage to Islay is incomplete without experiencing the spirit that flows through its veins. Tour the distilleries, witness the art of whisky-making firsthand, and savor the golden nectar that has put Islay on the map of whisky aficionados worldwide.
Lagavulin Distillery
@emmawilliams
Hands down, this is my absolute favorite place on earth. I've enjoyed many conversations in the small tasting room. Nick Offerman, Ron Swanson from the television show Parks and Recreation, has been partnering with this distillery the past few years with his own editions of Lagavulin.

Ardbeg Distillery
@emmawilliams
This location is, in my opinion, the most commercialized distillery on the island. Located on the southern coast of Islay, Ardbeg is known for its peaty and smoky whiskies. Take a tour of the distillery to learn about the whisky-making process and enjoy a tasting of their distinct expressions. There is also a cafe if you are in need of refreshments.

Laphroaig Distillery
@emmawilliams
With a picturesque location on the southern coast, Laphroaig is renowned for its intensely peated whiskies. Take a tour to explore their iconic warehouse, learn about their 200-year-old traditions, and experience the unique flavors of their drams. Don't forget to sign up for your own parcel of land and collect your rent - a wee dram of Laphroaig.

Bruichladdich Distillery
@emmawilliams
If you are tired of scotch, fear not, Bruichladdich is also home to The Botanist Gin. I thought I hated gin until I tasted The Botanist. All ingredients for The Botanist are foraged on Islay itself. In regards to their scotch, the last time I was there in 2020, I was able to bottle and label my own bottle!

Bunnahabhain Distillery
@emmawilliams
I love this distillery for it's completely different vibe and atmosphere. This distillery is known for less peaty scotch. Make sure to taste and purchase a few of their distillery-exclusive scotches.

Kilchoman
@emmawilliams
This operation is as close to farm-to-table as you can get with scotch. Located on the western side of the island, Kilchoman is a farm distillery that produces heavily peated whiskies. Visit their facility to witness the entire whisky-making process, from growing barley to bottling, and taste their unique expressions.
