Shanghai in a week: A family friendly, first timer's guide to discover the city
Shanghai is an extremely convenient city to explore. Although a lot of the Western apps are blocked, there are plenty of Chinese alternatives that can be downloaded prior to travel, to make it easy to get around and pay for items.
Before Travel
- Get an eSim. There are a number eSim companies that offer plans for the country and travel period that you need. A data only plan is sufficient while travelling.
- Download WeChat. It is a messaging and calling app with integrated mobile payment features. It is used by everyone from taxi drivers and street vendors to local tailors (see the section on 'Shopping' for more info about the tailors**). Set up and activate Weixin Pay using your international card. Weixin Pay can be used for online purchases or when purchasing from a physical store.
- Download and set up AliPay. AliPay takes international cards and can be used for purchases online or instore. AliPay also has built-in mini apps, so you can book and pay for train tickets and hotels through the app.
- DiDi is the popular ride hailing company. You can download the app or use the integrated mini app through AliPay
