Welcome to Estonia 🇪🇪 - two days in Tallinn!

Have you ever considered visiting Estonia? If not, you absolutely should (and soon!). 

Upon arriving at Tallinna Lennujaam (Tallinn Airport), you have various transportation options to explore the city:

- Walking: Discover the charm of Tallinn on foot, soaking in its rich culture and picturesque streets.

- Taxi Services: Opt for Forus, a service with professional taxi drivers. Alternatively, you can also utilize ride-sharing platforms like Bolt or Uber for convenient and reliable transportation.

- Public Transport: Experience the local flavor by catching a bus or tram, offering an efficient and budget-friendly way to navigate the city. If you want to walk a bit, you could also get to Ülemiste and take a train to the Tallinn train station!

Note: Previously, you could conveniently take the tram from the airport to the city. However, in 2023, construction commenced on the Vanasadama (Old Harbour) tramline on 7 March. Throughout the construction period, there will be temporary alterations to public transport routes and traffic management in the city center, resulting in the tram no longer reaching the airport. While you can still utilize the tram within the city, it will not operate to and from the airport during this time. Although, once finished, this will be a huge thing for Tallinn because it will connect the airport to the harbour!

Keep in mind: Google Maps serves as a valuable companion, regardless of your chosen mode of transportation. Whether you're exploring on foot, taking a taxi, or using public transport, the app provides real-time navigation, helping you seamlessly navigate Tallinn's streets and landmarks. Enjoy your journey with the convenience and guidance that Google Maps offers!

Upon arrival at the airport, make your way to the lobby, and just outside, you'll find the taxi stand with Forus, or you can conveniently use Bolt or Uber – note that Bolt includes both professional and private drivers. Take a right, and you'll spot a kiosk offering a variety of snacks, sandwiches, beverages, and sweets – perfect if you're feeling hungry. Continue walking until you reach the doors with a view of the planes on your right. Proceed a bit further, descend the stairs, and you'll find the bus and tram stops.

For real-time information on arrival times, check the displays. You can also purchase tickets in the same spot, using the automatic machines to buy tram or bus tickets, or even long-distance bus tickets to Tartu (online is tpilet.ee). 

When boarding the bus with your printed ticket, locate the machine to validate the QR. For long-distance buses, the driver will scan your QR, so always keep your ticket handy – no need to print, your cellphone suffices. If you plan on staying in Tallinn, consider purchasing a 1-hour ticket for the tram or bus (approximately 1 euro). 

Alternatively, explore the option of the Tallinn Card upon reaching the city. It provides a day of free public transport (trolleys, trams and buses) along with complimentary access to over 50 museums and attractions, plus discounts at various shops and restaurants. Useful tip: Near the airport is the Tallinna Bussijaam (Bus Station), where you can purchase tickets for long-distance buses (Tartu, for example).

Explore the must-visit gem of Tallinn – an authentic medieval enclave that captivates with its mystical Old Town. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, this enchanting locale stands among the world’s most revered landmarks.

Immerse yourself in the allure of Raekoja Plats (Town Hall) and the charming streets that intertwine with it. Serving as both a marketplace and the heart of this ancient Hanseatic town since the Middle Ages, Town Hall Square continues to play a pivotal role today. In summer, it transforms into a lively space with outdoor cafes, hosting events like Old Town Days and medieval festivals, as well as open-air concerts and fairs. Winter brings a magical Christmas market adorned with a towering spruce tree.

Discover Estonia's awe-inspiring natural wonders, beckoning you to explore enchanting parks such as Toompark and Hirvepark. Revel in the breathtaking landscapes while encountering historical treasures like the iconic Pikk Hermann and engaging museums that unveil the rich tapestry of Estonia's past. 

Elevate your experience with a visit to the Kohtuotsa viewing platform, an outdoor haven offering sweeping vistas of Old Town's charming red roofs. Unwind at the seasonal café or immerse yourself in vibrant events, embracing every facet of Estonia's allure. For a breathtaking panorama of the entire city, don't miss the Patkuli viewing platform. Nestled in one of Tallinn's oldest quarters, this platform offers an idyllic and enchanting view of the Old Town, with its iconic towers and walls extending down to the port. The historic stairway leading to the platform dates back to 1903, boasting 157 steps that gracefully connect Toompea hill to the town below. As you ascend, the stairway emerges in Toompark by the serene Snelli pond, providing a perfect vantage point for a memorable cityscape experience.

For delectable dining options, don't miss the variety of places around Town Hall Square. Experience the Olde Hansa Restaurant, an internationally renowned medieval-themed eatery, or indulge in traditional treats at Kohvik Maiasmokk, Tallinn's oldest cafe since 1964. When craving Estonian sweets like marzipan, opt for Kalev – a brand synonymous with quality.

If you find the time, a visit to Kadriorg is highly recommended – a presidential yet inviting area near the coast, featuring the Kadriorg Palace and art museum set against the picturesque Kadriorg Park. This 18th-century park, adorned with fountains and streams, is surrounded by historic wooden houses, their detailed door frames framed by blooming tree branches. 

Explore elegant restaurants, charming local cafes, and a sophisticated art scene, with Estonia’s largest art collection showcased in KUMU art museum, Kadriorg Art Museum, and Adamson-Eric museum, all lining the park's edge.

For shopping enthusiasts, nearby malls such as Viru Keskus, Kaubamaja, and Stockmann offer a blend of retail therapy and dining options.

I leave below some places so you can get some ideas of what to do!

- HOP Gallery (free): HOP is unique applied art and design non-profit gallery in Estonia. Galleries purpose is to show professional applied art from Estonia and foreign countries, to show design and creation of young artists, to patronize jubilee exhibitions and to go between the artist and audience.

- Museum and Visitor Centre of Fat Margaret, Estonian Maritime Museum (free): Listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, the complex provides an overview of maritime trade, agencies, and navigation in the Middle Ages, as well as in the era of sailing, steam, and motor ships. There is a total of 1,000 m² of exhibition space. The star exhibit is the 700-year-old Koge wreck found in Kadriorg in 2015. There are about 70 ship models out of which 17 have been created especially for the exhibition, nearly 700 items, and 50 digital and hands-on solutions.

- The Museum and Library of Kadriorg Park (free): At the museum, you can see various materials about the park: layout, photos, newspapers, magazines, posters, memorabilia, etc. The museum regularly hosts thematic exhibitions, such as photography exhibitions, garden projects of the Flower Festival, compositions made of natural materials, or roses growing in the park. 

- Fotografiska Tallinn (12 euros): Fotografiska is a modern international photo museum where photography, art, and an open mindset meet. It creates dynamic and unique exhibitions that include various genres in an audience-engaging environment. 

- ArtDepoo art gallery (free); is a gallery in Kalamaja district, Tallinn, that exhibits modern art of Estonia. Since 2015, it has been focusing on project-based exhibitions. The gallery is located in the former Norma sheet metal factory complex, which history, location, and architecture are of great interest to passersby and visitors. The gallery's aim is to enhance the visitor's art awareness and provide both art education and exhibition space for young emerging artists who are just beginning their careers in the art field.

- Tallinn TV Tower's observation deck (17 euros): At a height of 170 metres, you will be treated to one of the most magnificent views of the Estonian capital city. You can enjoy a captivating panoramic view that stretches further than the eye can see. You can observe the bustling city life, watch beautiful sunsets, and feel the wind. Today, the TV Tower has three main functions: to provide nationwide communication, to offer traditional Estonian flavours in a modern restaurant and to provide experiences. Tallinn TV Tower offers a picturesque view all year round, no matter the weather! PS: this is a little bit far away from the Town Hall!
