When going to London city from Stansted airport, the fastest option is the train. It takes about 40 minutes to get to Liverpool Station, where you easily have access to the metro. 

We prebooked the traintickets. You can also book them at the airport, but I believe they will be a little more expensive. 

The trains have “Flexible travel” which means that you can catch any train on your outbound travel date. This is quite nice if your flight gets delayed. Also if you buy a return ticket, you can return any time within a month.

It has always been cheaper for me to buy a returnticket rather than two single rides.

I have also gone by bus two times. The busride is quite longer than the trainride, however sometimes it’s way cheeper. Also the bus might stop close to your hotel which means that you don’t have to change from train to metro.

(make sure you select the right rutes! One time we somehow ended up with the rute “liverpoolstation - Stansted” which made our returntickets invalid. We had no trouble getting on the train where our ticket got scanned. However when we got of the train in Stansted, they were invalid. The told us it was an honest mistake, but we ended up giving us a fine anyway.)

The traffic in London can be a little crazy in general. I would therefore always recomend using the metro. It is faster and it is also a very logical and easy system once you get to know it. 

At most stations there are staff ready to help you.

We have used the Oystercard every time. It is easy to fill it up and can be used for both the red buses and metro. It’s more than 50% cheaper than buying a paper Travelcard or single tickets with cash - According to the webside.

(you have to pay a 7 pound deposit for it, however you can use it every time you visit London if you keep it)

Also Oyster cards have a daily price cap – once you reach the limit, you won't pay for any additional journeys.

You can order the card from home, however we just bought it at the stations which was very easy.

London is a really big city with alot to offer, which means that is a good idea to plan and choose what you want to see. When we are planning a trip to London we always select which areas we want to visit, what we are going to see in that area, and choose which days we are going to see them - divide it into sections as much as possible. (Otherwise you can end up not really seeing the city because you are too busy running around the whole city.)

Changing of the Guard Dates & Times

If you want to experience the famous Changing the Guard ceremony it harpens Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 11:00. It is where the New Guard replaces the Old guards.
