South Brooklyn: A Taste of the USSR
Luiza Oganesian
A guide to eating your way across the iron curtain. South Brooklyn is often overlooked and tourism beyond the Dyker Heights Christmas lights and Coney Island's Luna Park is rarely talked about. This is a guided tour with full access to authentic experiences full of delicious cuisine, dancing and entertainment.
It will feel like you have traveled to Russia, Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan or Uzbekistan in one concentrated area of the city, situated by the ocean.
After moving out of New York I realized that South Brooklyn is NOT America. This little part of the world is the only area that gives you access to true Eastern European and Mediterranean culture, tradition and cuisine with the ability to experience it all authentically without a passport.
Here is a guide to the hidden gems of South Brooklyn. A list of cafes, ocean view restaurants and where to celebrate life and special occasions if you want to dance the night away with live music and great food.

Chateau De Capitaine

Small dance floor and great for private parties. The menu is delicious and high quality. I would recommend even for a night of a la carte dinner and dancing without reserving pre-ordered banquet.

Sky Wise Lounge
@luizaoganesian
Located on the top floor with a beautiful view of the bay. Miami style supper club vibes. The menu is Asian fusion - first of its kind for a "Russian style" restaurant. The show is erotic and sexy, and so are all the performers and singers. So much fun for a large group, and there is also the option to grab a drink at their bar which is perfect to do during show time. Lots of birthdays being celebrated with sparkler champagne presentations. Dance floor is medium size but becomes overcrowded for the amount of people in the space. It has a crowded, wild and fun party vibe. Drinks are fabulous - full bar with additional option for BYOB.

Baku Palace
@luizaoganesian
Baku Palace will always be a classic and one of the OG Russian Restaurants left in Brooklyn. There is an outdoor terrace open in the summer and two rooms for parties: one more suitable for a smaller private event, and another grand main room. They recently remodeled to a white and gold aesthetic in the grand room. Music and singers are amazing and music is always a blend that depends on the guests in attendance. Food is so good and as always, its BYOB."
