Exploring the city of Praia: Santiago, Cabo Verde

One of my absolute favorite things to do in Praia is visiting Quebra Canela Beach, fondly referred to by us locals as "Kebra.". This local hotspot offers an authentic Cabo Verdean experience. As you step onto the sandy shore, you'll be greeted by a lively atmosphere filled with beach bars, restaurants, kayaks, diving lessons and other beach activities.

If you're in the mood for some shopping, Praia Shopping is the place to be. This modern mall offers a wide range of stores, restaurants, bar lounges, a supermarket, a movie theater, and even a hotel. You'll find everything you need under one roof.

But what sets Praia Shopping apart is its breathtaking ocean view and the restaurant called Ipanema. Indulge in a delectable meal while overlooking the vast expanse of the ocean. Although the prices may be a bit higher than at regular restaurants, the ambiance and view more than make up for it.

Praia, with its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich cultural heritage, offers an incredible array of experiences for travelers. From relaxing on the local beaches, to day trips to nearby cities/towns, to supporting artisans, and emerging in the lively nightlife - there's something for everyone.

The best place to find local artisans, shop for Cabo Verdean goods, and souvenirs is at Sucupira. This bustling marketplace, located at the heart of the city, promises an enriching and immersive experience that is not to be missed. There you will find everything from fresh food, to hair braiding shops, to custom-made bracelets, to a bus terminal. This market can get very crowded, so plan to visit during the early mornings.

Nestled along the shoreline, a mere 10-minute walk from Quebra Canela, awaits the beautiful Prainha beach. This beach attracts less crowds compared to Quebra Canela, and is smaller in size. It is surrounded by hotels and beautiful residential homes, with a stunning all-white restaurant right on the sand.

Welcome to Praia, the bustling capital city of the Santiago Island in Cabo Verde! I want to take you on a journey through my motherland, from its stunning beaches to its delicious cuisines. Let me introduce you to all the hidden gems that Praia and the nearby cities has to offer, from a native point of view. 

Praia has plenty of taxis roaming around, they are super convenient and inexpensive. The taxis range from 200-500 CVE (2 - 5 USD) per ride to anywhere within the city, with the exception of going to/from the Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI) which will always cost 1000 CVE. 

Many tourists prefer to pay a taxi driver for a whole day to driven around. If this is something you prefer to do, do not hesitate to ask a driver. Majority of time they will take the job, if the price is right. 

There are busses that are less than 50 cents to majority of neighborhoods and in the city. Most places are walking distance from a bus stop, however I would not recommend walking around at night - especially alone. 

 Hiace (pronounced as 'Yasi') is a shared minibus commonly used to travel between the city (Praia) and nearby cities/towns/villages. The Hiace Terminal in Praia is located at Sucupira Market. 

There are several Rent-A-Car locations in the Praia along with private car rental businesses. Check some of them out below.

Keep in mind that It is common for hiace drivers to drive around the city with you in the vehicle to hustle more people inside. They try to fill every seat before heading to your final destination. If you get motion sick easily I suggest you avoid ridding in a hiace altogether.

Linha d'Água restaurant is a picturesque beachfront restaurant, with panoramic view of Prainha beach. There you can indulge in tasty cuisines and handcrafted cocktails, just steps away from the beach waves. 

Nila, the talented owner of Sapataria Socorrinho is an artisan that handcrafts beautiful sandals and shoes. She sometimes vends on Rua Pedonal but mainly works out of her own shop. Watching her create these masterpieces was a true delight, and hearing her story and passion for her craft was truly inspiring. A recently built open-style shopping center in the vibrant neighborhood of Palmarejo. The shopping center offers variety of restaurants, bars and desert spots. A good place to hangout with your friends, children and family. 

Rua Pedonal is a popular street in the city center of Praia, Plateau. It is a fantastic spot for shopping during the day, you will find artisans with vending booths selling handcrafted jewelry, bags, clothing, shoes and much more.

Cachupa is Cabo Verde's national dish - a hearty stew brimming with corn, beans, vegetables, and often meat or fish, embodies the essence of traditional Cabo Verdean comfort food.

Savor the soulful simplicity of Buzio (Conch), a tasty traditional slow-cooked stew made with conch and soya sauce. 

Cabo Verdean couscous, known as "cuscus", is a traditional breakfast food  that is made mainly of corn flour or mandioca (yucca) flour. A delicious cake-like dish made with cornmeal, sugar and cinnamon (optional), usually served warm with butter, cheese, or milk. 

Another staple traditional dish, Feijoada, a bean stew elevated by the bold flavors of sausage and smoked meats.

Whether you're savoring a meal at a seaside restaurant or indulging in street food along the bustling promenades, the food in Praia embodies the traditions of Cabo Verde. Here's a list of more restaurants that you can find traditional dishes and more, that is worth visiting.
