Tucked between Switzerland and Austria, Liechtenstein is a tiny little country that most people only think of from Heath Ledger's character's assumed name to compete in a tournament. But it's so much more than that!

Know Before You Go:

Liechtenstein doesn't use the Euro but the Swiss Franc (CHF) instead. Most places in Liechtenstein take credit cards but keep in mind that occasionally you'll need cash for parking meters or food stands.

Liechtenstein is part of the Schengen Zone but not part of the EU. That means the borders are open (no passport checking, mostly), but it also means you'll need to count it if you're traveling in Europe without a visa.

Because of its long relationship with Germany & Austria, Liechtenstein speaks German and follows a lot of their cultural norms. For example, businesses often close at 5 p.m., and the dinner hour falls around 6 p.m. Many businesses also close on Sundays, so don't choose Sunday as your only day in Liechtenstein!

Another norm for the region: Liechtenstein isn't cheap. The cost of living is similar to Switzerland (meaning, on the pricey side). So factor in higher prices for meals while you're here.

They also use different plugs! The sockets follow the Swiss style, not the German or Italian styles. If you have a two-pronged Europlug (type C), it should work, but best to have a universal adapter!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Amateur Italian, travel advisor, and adventurous eater! I’m a travel creative living in small town northern Italy, and I've been planning travel for over 15 years. I've lived on three continents and visited over 40 countries, so I'm passionate about helping travelers experience the best of a location, no matter where! I love both/and travel: I want to see the big sights AND the local hangouts, the big cities AND the small towns. I’d love to help you do it too! If you’re going to Rome for the first time, you don’t need me to tell you to see the Colosseum. But you might want me to tell you if it’s better as a guided tour or on your own, what add-on’s are worth the money, and what are the extra secret things your ticket can get you! My favorite part of travel is eating well: finding the local haunts, tasting a new wine, and trying the local dishes. Amazing food doesn't have to be expensive: sometimes the best of a place is in the street food! But if it is a splurge, I'll make sure it's worth every penny. I'd love to work with you to create the trip of your dreams!
