We thought it'd be cool to write little blogs about the food we try on our travels. Last weekend, we visited Opatija and Rijeka. There is something that we have tried and sharing it with you, it's a must! FRITULE. 

If Croatia's on your travel radar, you absolutely gotta give fritule a shot! Promise, you won't regret it. And in case you're wondering, what in the world are fritule? Well, continue reading – we're about to explain! 

Fritule are made with a simple dough of flour, eggs, sugar, and yeast, and they are often flavored with citrus zest, vanilla extract, or rum. They can be sprinkled with powdered sugar for sweetness and decoration, and they are sometimes served with a dipping sauce such as chocolate sauce or honey. Enjoyed throughout the year but especially during the Christmas and New Year's celebrations. We had them with white chocolate spread and crushed Oreos on top. It cost 4 euros in Rijeka. 

Here's a recipe if you want to give it a shot at home. Honestly, I haven't tried it myself because I'm a bit scared of dealing with hot oil (I hope I'm not the only one with this fear—let's not laugh, we all have different fears, right? 😂). A friend from Croatia shared this and swears it's the absolute best.

Recipe :)

Ingredients:·

20 spoons of flour

·1 baking powder or 1 teaspoon of baking soda

·2 eggs

·4 tablespoons of sugar

·1 vanilla sugar ·a pinch of salt

·2 small glasses of liquid yogurt

·a bit of rum (optional)

·1 liter of oil for frying

Instructions:

Mix the flour with baking powder. Whisk the eggs with sugar and vanilla sugar, add salt, yogurt, and rum, then mix into the flour. Stir the mixture well with a whisk until it becomes smooth and lumps disappear.

Heat the oil to at least 2 cm in height, so the fritters can float in the oil. Take a teaspoon in each hand. Dip the teaspoons in a bowl of oil to prevent the mixture from sticking to them. Using one spoon, scoop the mixture and transfer it over the hot oil, then use the other spoon to separate the mixture into the oil.

Fry for about one minute on each side. Remove the fryed fritters onto a paper towel, then while they are still warm, pour chocolate glaze or chocolate spread over them.
