WARUNG - local eateries
I had to start this foodie map with the best warungs on the island.
''Warung'' is an Indonesian word that literally means restaurant. They are the soul of culinary heritage, often managed by families, with recipes that have been passed down through generations. They are scattered all around, but here is the top list - enjoy!
Toko Buibu
@loganfaure
Managed by the wonderful Estelle, this authentic warung is undoubtedly a hidden gem. Located away from the city center, this lunch spot offers an authentic Indonesian food. Estelle and her team decide each morning's what they will serve based on the market and season. Make sure to arrive early because they are often sold out by 3 pm. Also look at their Instagram to see today's specials: https://www.instagram.com/tokobuibu/

Warung Jawa Bu Sri
@loganfaure
What can we say about Madame Sri? Well, she's always sporting a warm smile, in a perpetual good mood, and, most importantly, she consistently serves up top-notch quality food. For just 50K IDR (3.5$), you can savor authentic Balinese cuisine made with the freshest locally-sourced ingredients. Personally, I usually let Madame Sri make the choices for me because I know everything she serves is absolutely delicious! Special mentions go to the fried tempe, the sambal, and the coconut green beans.

Warung Kelapa
@loganfaure
A truly charming spot run by an equally charming couple, this warung is located just 20 minutes from Canggu in Kedungu, making it a must-visit. They adhere to a fantastic policy of using only coconut oil, and all their dishes, right there for you to choose from, are consistently fresh and delightfully aromatic. Don't miss out on the opportunity to explore the Kedungu region, still largely untouched by real estate developers (though that might not last forever). You can surf by the beach and pay a visit to Kelapa to recharge energy. And when you do visit, be sure to try the chicken wrapped in banana leaves and lemongrass – it's something truly special!

Bakso Iga Canggu
@loganfaure
Bakso is a traditional broth featuring meat or fish balls, fragrant herbs, and noodles. It's a beloved classic in Balinese street food cuisine, and Bakso Iga, in particular, has won the hearts of locals and expats. Don't let the appearance of the place fool you; "the best hidden gems are often unassuming" (RIP Anthony Bourdain), yet their food is consistently spot-on and authentic. Request extra aromatic herbs and if you're not accustomed to spicy food ask for sambal on the side. Enjoy!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
@Logan_forkaround
Hi 👋, I'm Logan, a foodie by trade and passion. I explore the world by designing and curating experiences in restaurants and hotels 🗺️. After my hospitality studies in Switzerland, and for the past 15 years, I have helped to open more than 50 hotels and over 150 restaurants. In the process, I've had to explore many cities, indulging in a lot of eating and drinking for market study purposes, but also for pure pleasure, as the love for food runs in our family's blood, with chefs, winemakers, and bakers ❤️ Here are the golden rules that I've established before starting this guide :
✨ GOLDEN RULES OF F*RK AROUND ✨
🐵 All recommendations are based on merit-only—no sponsorship—no paid reviews.
🙈 Taste comes 1st, Style 2nd—it is not a list of where to be seen during fashion week.
🙉 Focus on finding hidden gems in both city centers and off-road locations.
🙊 We are not here to damage businesses, only to give merit to those who do well.
