My favorite time of year to visit Yellowstone is early October. You can escape the crowds and see more wildlife, and the weather is generally good but you might catch the occasional snow.

Transportation

Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport BZN
@WhereWeEat
This is where we flew in and out for our trip. I recommend renting a vehicle with 4-wheel drive here because weather can change quickly year round.

Super fun boutique hotel in Bozeman. Convient when flying in and out from Bozeman. They serve a welcome drink that was an awesome touch. The cafe also makes really great breakfasts and specialty espresso drinks.

Tips to help you be prepared

Check the weather before your trip, but know it can change quickly and it’s always best to have a four wheel drive vehicle option here.

Many stores and restaurants in and around the park are only open during the summer and early fall, plan to pack lunches and snacks to keep you going during a long day.

Gas stations are infrequent and expensive in the park, make sure to fill up before going in.

NPS App recommdations:

Download the Yellowstone Park page for offline use, cell service in the park is limited.

You will want to take advantage of the self guided audio tours, they are super informative and will help you understand more context of what you’re looking at, provide detailed maps, and give a time estimate of different routes. We especially enjoyed: Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin, Upper Terrace Drive, and Mud Volcano.
