Wander With Lou
Located in Yunnan Province of China, Lijiang offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and scenic breathtaking natural landscapes. It truly is one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited in China, so much so I had to go back a second time! This guide contains all of the best things to do during your visit.

1. Old Town of Lijiang

Lijiang Old Town

Within the ancient town, you can find endless restaurants, book stores, vintage shops and cute rooftop cafes.

Walking through the cobblestone streets of Lijiang Old Town feels like stepping back in time. The best thing to do is wander around and get lost in the maze of narrow alleyways and hidden courtyards. Find somewhere to sit down, slow down and take in your surroundings! I recommend finding a hotel in Lijiang’s Old Town for the duration of your stay.

2. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Take the cable car up to Glacier Park, and then slowly walk up to 4860m above sea level for absolutely breathtaking views.

An absolute highlight of Lijiang is Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Also known as Yulong Snow Mountain, it’s truly an awe-inspiring experience. I recommend booking this tour below – it includes pick up from your hotel, transport to the mountain and around other attractions including Blue Moon Valley.

The temperature at the top can get very cold, so remember to wear warm clothes. The stunning views are absolutely unforgettable.

3. Blue Moon Valley

The turquoise lakes of Blue Moon Valley, surrounded by lush greenery and white sandbanks, are incredibly surreal.

Just at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain lies Blue Moon Valley, and it’s every bit as magical as it sounds. This location is included in the previously mentioned tour. You can easily spend a long time here, soaking in the scenery, capturing photos of the crystal clear waters that mirror the sky. It really feels like paradise.

4. Shuhe Ancient Town

Shuhe Ancient Town
@wanderwithlou
Another old town just outside of Lijiang, but less crowded and with it’s own unique charm.

The stone bridges and canals reminded me of Lijiang, but felt more laid back. I actually visited here on Chinese New Year’s Day, usually a day to spend with family, but all of the locals were still so welcoming. Here you can find craftsmen creating everything from silver jewellery to traditional Naxi textiles.

5. Black Dragon Pool

Black Dragon Pool
@wanderwithlou
A peaceful retreat with free entry just outside of the Old Town, with probably the best view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain from the city!

The reflection of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the Black Dragon Pool is iconic, and the small pavilions and bridges add to the charm. It’s a photographer’s dream spot, and it’s actually not been busy both times I visited!

6. Jade Water Village

Jade Water Village
@wanderwithlou
A fascinating place, rich in cultural significance. It’s known as a spiritual site for the Naxi people, with sacred spring water and lush surroundings.

I visited Jade Water Village with a new local friend. I hadn't heard of it because it isn't usually on itineraries for Lijiang! It’s a bit further away from the city, but I really enjoyed my time here and learning about the God of the Naxi people.

7. Lion Hill

Hike up to Wangu Pavilion on Lion Hill to get panoramic views of the Old Town!

Lion Hill is located on the outskirts of the Old Town. You can see the rooftops of the Old Town, stretching out towards the surrounding mountains. It’s the perfect spot to appreciate the beauty of this incredible city.

8. Baisha Old Town

Baishazhen
@wanderwithlou
Another smaller old town, known for the ancient Baisha Frescoes, which offer a glimpse into the rich history and artistry of the Naxi culture.

Baisha Old Town is another quieter, more relaxed alternative to Lijiang’s bustling Old Town. I enjoyed wandering around, chatting with locals, and sitting in the cute cafes for hours. It’s a great place to learn more about the traditions that have shaped the region.
