Montreal transportation
For the first time, it's so confusing when to have to take the bus or the metro in a new city!
So many informations: what is Opus Card, fares and colorful metro lines?!
Here I will explain everything you need to know, so after you read it, it will be so clear to you, as a tourist or permanent resident.
Every bus, metro, train, REM... everything is under the STM logo, which is Société de transport de Montréal.
First: OPUS CARD
- it's a card that you have to buy it, then charge it with different types of transit fares, usually regular fare.
- you can buy it only from metro stations with debit card/ credit card and sometimes with cash.
-you go to the ticket offices and ask for one. For more information, visit their website:
Metro lines
We have 4 colors lines: Green, Orange, Blue and Yellow.
A lot of people use metro everyday because it fast, cheap, safe and comes very quickly.
Every line connects with the others at specific stations.
For more information, please visit STM website:
At each ticket office, you can ask a map of metro lines! It's free of charge.
There are 2 important zones: A and B.
Zone A: means Montreal zone, metro and buses, REM.
Zone B means Laval, Brossard, Longueil zones, orange line only and buses ( outside Montreal area).
Examples:
So, if you stay in Montreal and you want to visit Botanical Garden, which is in Montreal zone = Zone A, you just buy a fare for Zone A (All modes A).
But, if you stay in Montreal and you want to go to Laval/Brossard/Longueil to visit, you have to buy fare for Zones A and B (All modes AB) otherwise you can't come back in Montreal unless you buy a different fare.
To be sure what you need, just use Google Maps on your cell, enter Start point and Destination point, select bus and you'll have your answer; it's easy, right?
