This is a mini guide for the Island of Syros, Greece. I call it a "mini guide" because I have a larger and fuller 2 week Greek Island Itinerary. But if you're mixing and matching islands and just want to know about Syros, then this is the guide for you!
When we decided to return to Greece, I knew I wanted to look for something a little bit different. I spent countless hours Googling islands and reading blogs, and the honest truth is I don’t think you could go to a place in Greece that you wouldn’t like. There were a few reasons I chose Syros though and I am glad that I did.
Syros is special and different from other Greek islands I have visited. It has a very local feel and a bustling center in Ermoupoli. There is real life going on here and the island isn't JUST for tourism. Syros has wineries, amazing restaurants, incredible beaches, hiking, beautiful streets and alleys to wander down, and so much more. There is an incredible charm to visiting a different type of Greek island and I highly recommend staying here for a few days.
This guide will include everything that we did in Syros... tours that we loved, places we ate, beaches we went to, how to get around, and our favorite parts. I spent countless hours researching this trip before we went to make sure we got the best possible experience.
It will also include things we'd have done if we had more time and things that I'd still love to see on this incredible island.
The really cool thing about Syros is that it is an active city. This is the capital of the Cyclades and has a different vibe because it feels like a real city where people live and work, not just a place made for vacationers. We loved that about it and loved that it had a bustling square and town. There were so many great beaches here, so much good food, and the added bonus of going up to Ano Syros on the high hill for drinks and snacks and exploring. We could have spent even longer here just enjoying everything that Syros had to offer.
This airbnb was perfectly located. We really enjoyed the rooftop for sipping drinks, hanging out, and squeezing in some workouts. The space was small but more than comfortable for two people who don't spend a lot of time inside on vacation anyway. It was very walkable to everything we wanted to do in Syros and we were really happy with it.
This is the area that we stayed on this trip and the main city of Syros. We love staying here right in the action. We could walk to the port and to shops, restaurants, and even up to Ano Syros. If you want to stay entertained and have a lot going on, this is the spot for you!

How to Get Around
Since we based ourselves in the main town of Syros getting around wasn't challenging. From here we could walk to almost anything we wanted to do within the city. But when we wanted to get out and explore a bit having a quad was an awesome way to do that. The part of the city that we stayed in was quite compact and crowded and it was so easy to park the quad and be less stressed. I feel if we'd rented a car I would have wanted to stay in a different location as parking may have been intimidating.
We enjoyed riding the quad to different beaches all around Syros. George was wonderful and brought the quad to us nearby to our airbnb. He also let us drop it off in a similar location making things really easy!

Another option would be a rental car. If you prefer the comfort of a car and the safety it offers as well as getting around quickly and efficiently.
Our tour with Syros wine trails was one of our favorite things we did on this trip! We got to tour a cheese factory and taste amazing delicious cheeses and meet the owners. We then went to an absolutely stunning family winery and had snacks and tasted so many wines. Then we went to the incredibly beautiful garden of an Syros mansion home and had a dinner and wine tasting there as well! Our guide was incredible, knowledgeable and easy to talk to. This experience was by far a 10/10.
Our airbnb actually overlooked this square which was really nice. We enjoyed hanging out here and people watching. It was very lively as most squares in Europe are!
This church can only be reached by boat or hike. We are hikers and love an adventure so we did the hike. We rode the quad up as close as we could to the start but we still had to walk quite a way up hill. The hike took us about 40 mins and it is in the hot sun, but the church squeezed into the rocks is SO cool to see. We enjoyed the hike a lot and there is a beach right at the beginning of the hike so we were able to hop in the water after hiking. I believe anyone with reasonable fitness could do this hike with no problems, you may just need to go slower depending on how well you do with inclines. I advise you to go early so you're not going in the full heat of day.
Walking up to Ano Syros is an awesome adventure. Some might consider it a hike as it is a LOT of stairs haha. But you are rewarded with some of the most charming greek streets I have ever seen and incredible views over all of Syros. It is definitely worth getting up here and exploring during your time in Syros. I believe you could also take a car or bus up here. I also used the stairs as a workout in the mornings and run up to Ano Syros each morning of our stay.
We stopped here on our wine tour with Syros Wine Trails. But if you're not into the full wine tour, or just love cheese, it would be worth your while to see if these guys would give you a tour and tasting. We really loved their cheese and very much enjoyed visiting their shop!
We visited this winery on our tour with Syros Wine Trails and LOVED it. If you don't have time for the full Wine Trails tour, or just want to visit a specific winery this was a great one. We loved all that we tasted and enjoyed our tour and learning about their operation as well.
This place was super cool! It's right at the end of the main concrete beach in town and has such a fun vibe. People were partying hard here, but you could also be very chill and sit down by the water and even jump in for a swim. We enjoyed sitting with a drink and watching the scene and jumping into the ocean when we felt like it. You definitely stop here if this sounds like something you're into! It also has such an incredible/iconic view of Syros.
We loved our dinner here! We did make a reservation in advance. We sat RIGHT on the water and enjoyed the sunset while eating. I had a giant calamari here and it was great!
You'll notice this bar when you make the trek up to Ano Syros. It is SO beautiful and has incredible views over Syros. It is a perfect place to stop and have a drink or snack and hang out! Just BEAUTIFUL all around.
After traveling Europe for years I realize that the word "beach" can be used so loosely... and I love that! This is definitely not a sand beach. More like a concrete slab sticking out into the ocean. It is one of my favorite spots and we loved hanging out here during the day with the incredible view. Super bonus that it is about a 3 mins walk from the center of town.
We showed up here and the beach was pretty empty! We saw the big beanbag chairs and figured we'd have to pay to sit in them but they said they were free! We grabbed a drink and hung out here for a while it was pretty nice!
This place looked INCREDIBLY beautiful walking by. We hadn't made a reservation before arriving and we were too late by the time we got there. I would definitely look into this spot for a future trip!
My name is Danielle and I have been planning trips for the past 10 years.
One thing special and unique about my guides is that I am not producing guides that I didn't currently use myself. The places in my guides are places I have been, the itineraries are itineraries that I have personally followed. Everything is real and I have vetted myself.
My travel planning story started with a honeymoon to Italy and since then it has grown each and every year. I love all kinds of travel! It's hard to fine a niche because I fit into so many categories. I love nature, hiking, and being outdoors. I love beaches and sunsets and sipping wine and cocktails in pretty places. I love learning about people and cultures and history. I love street art and busy cities and I also love small towns and quieter places. I will sleep in a hostel and I enjoy a beautiful hotel. I love South and Central America and I am obsessed with Europe. I've been to Asia twice and hope to get back in the next few years. I love to eat and one thing you'll always get from me are true and great reviews of places that I've personally eaten! I have just returned from Albania and I am working on guides from that trip!
My full time job is as a School Leader of Social and Emotional Learning in Philadelphia. All my travel is done on school breaks and in the summer. I have still managed to visit over 36 countries and countless cities along the way. Being a teacher my whole life is about planning and I do believe I am exceptional at it. I work VERY hard to plan incredible trips and now you can hopefully benefit from that as well!
