Porto for Photographers | Location Guide & Tips 📸

Known for its stunning architecture, vibrant culture, and breathtaking views, Porto is a playground for street photography enthusiasts.

The best time to visit Porto is during spring, early summer, and early autumn. Be aware that in spring and autumn, rain and fog are more common, and the temperature can be chilly, so don't forget to check the forecast and bring an umbrella. 

Porto is a very popular city, so it's difficult to avoid crowds during the warmer months. Holidays and weekends are particularly busy.

You can easily move around on foot, and that's something you'll appreciate when hunting for the best shots. Metro and bus are the most convenient options, especially from and to the airport or longer distances. 

Safety and comfort as a solo photographer

I didn't experience any safety issues traveling as a solo female during daylight. When it comes to my gear, I felt comfortable leaving my tripod set up on the street. Due to the number of people taking photos around the city, you won't stand out. However, in busier spots, this is only feasible and recommendable in the early morning. Make sure to check your belongings frequently and avoid leaving them unattended for extended periods.

When in Gaia, you cannot miss the emblematic piece of street art Half Rabbit by Bordalo II and the stairs Escadaria da Tv. de Cândido dos Reis.

I stayed at The House of Sandeman - Hostel & Suites, which I highly recommend. Although it may seem slightly far from the center, it rewards you with unbelievable views of Cais da Ribeira and the Luis I Bridge. You can find some of the best wineries here, too. 

The best photographic spots I found were on the right side of the Posto de Turismo building, where there is some extra space and pavement, and behind the Mercado de Artesanato do Cais de Gaia, offering excellent views of Porto Cathedral and the Rabelos, traditional Portuguese cargo boats.

Tip 💡The waterfront is especially quiet in the morning. If you show up between 6 and 8 am, you will most likely have it all to yourself.

Enjoy stunning views of the Luis I Bridge! You can capture some fantastic shots from the waterfront and Calçada da Serra street. And, of course, don't miss the opportunity to take in the sights while walking on the lower part of the bridge!



When you cross the river, instead of taking the funicular, go up the most picturesque stairs in Porto. It's not just the view of the Luis I Bridge; it's also the street art and charming corners you'll be able to spot and photograph on the way up. 

Keep walking to explore Passeio das Fontainhas, one of my favorite places in Porto. There are several viewpoints to capture Gaia, the bridges, and the river. Below, you will see a traditional neighborhood that is very photogenic. However, be respectful and avoid entering any private areas or closed stairways, as unfortunately, some people do.

I stopped here, but you can continue forward for closer views of the Infante Dom Henrique Bridge. 

It's time to enjoy the lively Bolhão, where one of my favorite activities was filming short cinematic videos.

Tip 💡On Sta. Catarina Street, don't forget to take a break at one of the pastel de nata cafés, where you can enjoy this traditional Portuguese sweet pastry and see how it is made. Attention, they are addictive!

If you have some extra days, you can head to the beach at Foz de Douro or explore coastal towns like Aveiro, where you'll find the typical striped houses. 

 Stop at the Church of Saint Ildefonso; its baroque style is stunning, and you'll find it's not as crowded as some other spots. Nearby, you can start exploring charming vintage-style shops like LeYa in Latin, A Pérola do Bolhão, and the renowned opulent coffeehouse, Majestic Café.

Markets are a perfect place to capture daily life moments and get to know the locals. Unfortunately, this one was closed during my visit, but take a look if you can! 

I have written down all the Instagrammable spots I visited within 2 days in Porto, based on my experience, along with some hidden gems I found along the way. I have decided to group them by areas (based on proximity and convenience), so you can easily plan your visit and create your own itinerary.

Tip 💡If you prefer some privacy, silence and views of the Luis I Bridge, I recommend the following spots.

The Ribeira Viewpoint (Teleférico de Gaia), along with the Serra do Pilar Monastery and Jardim do Morro, are among the most popular spots for watching the sunset in Porto. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Ribeira and the Arrábida Bridge. While you can capture some beautiful pictures at these locations, be prepared for crowds.

While the tower itself might not be the most exciting thing to capture, you'll want to wait for the moment when the old tram starts its journey with colorful narrow buildings in the background, creating a painting-like picture.

This rococo church, adorned with beautiful tile-covered walls, is a must-see in Porto. When I visited, the light was already quite harsh, but this spot was still more enjoyable than the Chapel of Souls—less crowded and with more space. You might even want to wait for that perfect shot of a passerby against its wall!

Porto reveals its charm gradually, making it perfect for exploring on foot. You never quite know where those steep steps or narrow back alleys will take you. The following streets, or "ruas," so typical of Porto, with laundry hanging from windows, are the most interesting ones. 

Both viewpoints are worth visiting, even though they are so close to each other, you will get totally different perspectives. 

Probably the busiest building in Porto, and it's totally understandable why—its façade will blow your mind. Unlike other blue-tile walls, these aren't covered by a protective net, so the blues are intense and bright.
