Transportation:Ā
If you are flying in go to the DCA (Reagan) airport. It is conveniently located in DC unlike IAD (Dulles) which is more popular but a 45-minute drive to the city. If possible, I would recommend not booking a rental car and instead opting for Uber, Lift, and the Metro Station. Parking in DC can be expensive and tricky with the constant variation of available hours for commuting hours and events. If you do park a car, be sure to download the ParkMobile app.Ā
What to Do:
I would highly recommend walking down the National Mall! This is where I take every tourist that comes to the city. It's a simple mile-long walk to see some of the most renowned monuments. The National Mall is topped with the Washington Monument and concluded by the Lincoln Memorial. Along the walk, you will see the White House, the WWII Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean Memorial, and the reflecting pool.Ā
Museums:
Along Constitution Ave and Independence Ave, there is also a plethora of museums, most iconically, the Smithsonian's. These museums are generally free and walk-ins available. But check online beforehand to guarantee your admission, there are constant events and holidays to be aware of. Hours of admission are also typically during business, approximately 9-5.Ā
A common must-see is the Holocaust Museum. However, their most impressive exhibits are bookings-based. Make sure to make your reservation well in advance.Ā
Another great museum for those who are Christian is the Bible Museum. It is extremely impressive with many historical artifacts and interactive exhibits. I would plan to spend at least 3 hours here, but many people desire an even longer experience.Ā
Tips: if you are military or a first responder (with your ID!) you may be able to have limited tickets upon availability at the museums with no prior booking!
Places to Eat:
Be sure to check out the newly developed riverside Wharf! Here there are constant events and a great selection of upscale & casual restaurants. There are cafes, hotels, rooftops, bars, and shops as well.Ā
Coffee:
Most people have their go-to Starbucks order, so try out the Signing Starbucks staffed by the ASL community of DC! This is located next to Gallaudet University and across the street from a lovely bookstore. Learn some basic ASL to order your favorite, or write down your order on a provided notepad.Ā
Places to Stay:
Look into the phenomenal selection of hotels located in DC! Or, if you'd like you may also explore Airbnb, but please research the neighborhood beforehand. Additional options lay across the river in Arlington. Arlington is great for walkable restaurants, bars, cafes, and entertainment. It is also closer to DCA airport. Arlington also has places to see such as the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Air Force Memorial.Ā
