Going to Washington DC is an amazing privilege for anyone lucky to experience the most influential city! However, navigating it can be tricky... so here are some of my quick tips.Ā

Transportation:Ā

What to Do:

I would highly recommend walking down the National Mall! This is where I take every tourist that comes to the city. It's a simple mile-long walk to see some of the most renowned monuments. The National Mall is topped with the Washington Monument and concluded by the Lincoln Memorial. Along the walk, you will see the White House, the WWII Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean Memorial, and the reflecting pool.Ā

Museums:

Along Constitution Ave and Independence Ave, there is also a plethora of museums, most iconically, the Smithsonian's. These museums are generally free and walk-ins available. But check online beforehand to guarantee your admission, there are constant events and holidays to be aware of. Hours of admission are also typically during business, approximately 9-5.Ā

A common must-see is the Holocaust Museum. However, their most impressive exhibits are bookings-based. Make sure to make your reservation well in advance.Ā

Another great museum for those who are Christian is the Bible Museum. It is extremely impressive with many historical artifacts and interactive exhibits. I would plan to spend at least 3 hours here, but many people desire an even longer experience.Ā

Tips: if you are military or a first responder (with your ID!) you may be able to have limited tickets upon availability at the museums with no prior booking!

Places to Eat:

Be sure to check out the newly developed riverside Wharf! Here there are constant events and a great selection of upscale & casual restaurants. There are cafes, hotels, rooftops, bars, and shops as well.Ā

Coffee:

Most people have their go-to Starbucks order, so try out the Signing Starbucks staffed by the ASL community of DC! This is located next to Gallaudet University and across the street from a lovely bookstore. Learn some basic ASL to order your favorite, or write down your order on a provided notepad.Ā

Places to Stay:

Look into the phenomenal selection of hotels located in DC! Or, if you'd like you may also explore Airbnb, but please research the neighborhood beforehand. Additional options lay across the river in Arlington. Arlington is great for walkable restaurants, bars, cafes, and entertainment. It is also closer to DCA airport. Arlington also has places to see such as the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Air Force Memorial.Ā

My name is Izzy, I am DC based, and I have traveled to 14 countries + five continents in the last five years. My pursuit is to volunteer abroad, as it allows me to expand my horizons, gaining a profound insight into diverse cultures and their impact on our global community. Additionally, I find great pleasure in exploring various states within the US for my own personal enjoyment. (: Going... is meant to be filled in with the blanks of all of your travel desires! Where I am going and how I am doing it are frequent questions inquired of me from myself... but also by my family, friends, and co-workers.Ā  I have a profound passion for mindful travel, where I wholeheartedly immerse myself in the local culture, while carefully considering country-specific requirements, managing my budget thoughtfully, and prioritizing the exploration of history, interactions with the local people, and appreciation of the natural beauty of the destination. My approach involves actively engaging with the people of my chosen location, as I am dedicated to savoring the essence of the country, city, and its inhabitants before bidding adieu. I gauge the success of my trips by whether I've enjoyed my accommodations, discovered amazing food (and coffee, of course!), engaged in meaningful interactions with locals, acquired new knowledge, and experienced a touch of nature's beauty. I decided to make this page to keep an online journal of my travels and to inspire others to make their leaps into their own adventures. The first steps are hard because you do not know what you don't know. I want to help you ask the right questions, prepare yourself emotionally & practically, and foster excitement in what is ahead! I would love to connect with you to help you meet your travel desires and curate the perfect trip!
