Exploring the Charms of Konstanz, Germany

Exploring the Charms of Konstanz, Germany

Elif Yildiz Davulcu
Lake Constance, also known as Bodensee, borders Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Visiting this lake in summer truly gave me a delightful holiday vibe. Though it might not be Marmaris, Konstanz still provided me with a warm and enjoyable summer experience. While the lake brings fantastic picnics, boat tours, and fun water sports, Konstanz has much more to offer. The city is a haven for cyclists, with its festivals and beautiful streets making it worth exploring as a tourist, student, or even a potential resident. Here's my “Don’t leave Konstanz without experiencing these” list:

Zeppelins Overhead

Imagine waking up to the sight of majestic zeppelins gliding across the sky. In Konstanz, this unique experience feels almost like a simulation. With the legendary inventor **Ferdinand von Zeppelin** born right here, these airships are more than just a nostalgic nod to the past—they're a thrilling part of the local tourism scene. While they can be a bit pricey, a visit to the **Zeppelin Museum** in nearby **Friedrichshafen** is well worth it. You can even make the journey by boat from Konstanz!

Film Location

Movie buffs will be excited to know that parts of the film "A Dangerous Method" were filmed right here in Konstanz. You can even visit the steps by the lake where **Keira Knightley** stood, marked as the **Keira Knightley Spot** on local maps.

Swimming Spots

For a quieter swim, head to the shoreline stretching from **Seestraße** to **Hörnle**. At **Strandbad Horn**, you'll find beach volleyball, paddleboard rentals, toilets, and a cafeteria—ideal for a day by the lake. Another spot worth visiting is the **Badestrand - Universität Konstanz**, a public nudist beach at the university’s sports campus. If you're looking for warmer waters, the **Bodensee-Therme Konstanz** offers thermal pools and an Olympic pool, with reservations available online.

Festivals

Konstanz comes alive with festivals almost every weekend during the summer. My personal favorites include **Gassenfreitag** in the **Niederburg** district, which takes place on the first Friday of each month from May to October. The streets buzz with local stalls and live music. Don't miss other events like **Stadtgartenfest** and **Konstanzer Weinfest**, where local producers and artists showcase their delights through food, drinks, and dancing.

Flea Markets and Cultural Spots

Be sure to check out **Kantine KN** and **Kulturladen e.V.**, both of which night clubs as well as host vibrant flea markets. I stumbled upon a beautiful silk shirt at a kilo sale in **Kulturladen e.V.**. At **Kantine KN**, their Saturday flea market runs from noon to 5 PM, and they also host open-air cinema events. I had a hilarious time watching "Triangle of Sadness" there!

Weekend Trip to Switzerland

If you’re looking for a quick getaway, a half-hour stroll along the lake will lead you to charming Swiss municipalities. Following **Hafenstraße** takes you to **Kreuzlingen**, and walking along the Rhine from **Schänzle** park to the border checkpoint will bring you to **Gottlieben**. Just a heads up—some European phone tariffs may not work in Switzerland, so take precautions near the border.
