I like to stay near the old part of Bari. There are a couple of nice larger hotels. Since I usually travel with my groups, I tend to look for those sort of places to stay.
But now there are also Air B/B's as well. Beware, the neighborhood with the no traffic streets are packed with people walking around at night and outdoor dining.

I would suggest taking one of the nice tours of the old city with the biking company which provides both bike tours and where they take you around on the small Tuk Tuk called an Ape Calessino, It's a nice way to get an intro to the area, I take the food tour of course, which also provides a historical backround.

I always try to buy something from these wonderful ladies. If you can't buy the pasta, most have taralli or some local sweet!

When in Bari eat fish! This is a lovely smaller restaurant back by the castle. Most fish is sold by weight, probably 60 or 70 a kg. It's something you share usually. So don't be surprised. Often it might say 6 euro an hg which is an etto.. or 60 euro a kg which is 2.2 pounds.
You don't order by weight but rather pick your fish.
