Tucked into the Trentino Dolomite Alps, Vipiteno is a great weekend destination for outdoor sports! The town is quaint, with plenty of restaurants and a darling historic center.
Best of all? The longest sledding course in Italy is here! If you want to try real-life Mario Kart, come here for a hilarious day of zero-skill outdoor sports!
In this guide, you’ll get:
- locations for the cable car & rental spots (for skiing & snowboarding as well as sledding)
- 5 restaurants, from budget to splurge
- 1 hotel with breakfast & dinner possibilities
- the major sights with notes on what’s worth seeing and if they need advanced booking
- an interactive map to help navigate you to each spot

Vipiteno/Sterzing is a small Dolomite ski town! It sits just outside Bolzano, making it a good add-on if you want a day or two of skiing or sledding for a Bolzano trip.Â
*in this region of Italy, everything has both a German and Italian name, so I'll include both here*
Sights in Vipiteno
The big draw in Vipiteno is winter sports. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, Monte Cavallo/Rosskopf has a pretty epic Alpine sledding course. European sled routes cover miles, crisscrossing their way down the mountain.Â
Monte Cavallo has the longest sled route in Italy, stretching 10 km (~6 miles)! It's so much fun, feeling a bit like Mario Kart as you fly down the mountain. I highly recommend it!!!Â

Good sledding up here! 10 km/6 mile course - the longest in Italy. They also offer night sledding some weekend nights.

Amateur Italian, travel advisor, and adventurous eater!
I’m a travel creative living in small town northern Italy, and I've been planning travel for over 15 years. I've lived on three continents and visited over 40 countries, so I'm passionate about helping travelers experience the best of a location, no matter where!
I love both/and travel: I want to see the big sights AND the local hangouts, the big cities AND the small towns. I’d love to help you do it too!
If you’re going to Rome for the first time, you don’t need me to tell you to see the Colosseum. But you might want me to tell you if it’s better as a guided tour or on your own, what add-on’s are worth the money, and what are the extra secret things your ticket can get you!
My favorite part of travel is eating well: finding the local haunts, tasting a new wine, and trying the local dishes. Amazing food doesn't have to be expensive: sometimes the best of a place is in the street food! But if it is a splurge, I'll make sure it's worth every penny.
I'd love to work with you to create the trip of your dreams!
