Japan has amazing food and amazing culture, but the coffee in Japan is something you need to actively look for if you want to find a really good cup of joe.
This is my guide to the best cups of coffee I had on my 2 and a half months of travel in Japan.

This is a tiny hole in the wall coffee shop that seats about 5 people at a time.
The owner is a world champion at latte art and makes the most amazing cups of coffee with gorgeous foam art.

This is one of my favorite coffee shops in Osaka!
The staff are super friendly, the coffee is wonderful and the food is simple but delicious.
It also has a great vibe for working on your laptop, which they allow only during the slow hours of the day.

This is a super cute coffee shop located in the middle of a residential street in Tokushima.
The owner is a true professional when it comes to coffee and will let you smell the different types of beans before you choose your fave!
He even roasts his own beans.
You can get a small homemade dessert with your coffee and the vibe is absolutely perfect.

The location of this coffee shop is beautiful, it's right on the river overlooking the beautiful city hall.
They have great coffee, yummy desserts, blankets and heaters outside in case you get cold.
I loved sitting outside and writing in my travel journal!

This place is great for a coffee break after climbing through the Fushimi Inari temple.
They have yummy coffee and a simple yet fulfilling banana muffin that you can snack on next to your coffee.
They have seats overlooking a beautiful stream and garden which is the most wonderful way to relax after all that walking.

I found it while wandering around the alleyways of Kyoto in search of a cute place to sit and drink coffee.
