Tbilisi: A design lover’s city guide

Saskia Veendorp
Welcome to my carefully curated guide to Tbilisi, where industrial-chic hotels, hip coworking spaces, street-side cafes, and hidden art spaces come together to create a city brimming with character. This is my current hometown, a place where every corner invites discovery—whether it’s a hole-in-the-wall marionette theater or an off-the-grid courtyard café only locals seem to know about. Tbilisi is where old-world charm meets a raw, urban edge—cobblestone streets and ancient baths coexist effortlessly with sleek galleries and modern design hotels. It’s a city of contrasts, bridging the surreal and the everyday with ease. Georgia, too, reflects this duality: warm and whimsical, steeped in history yet buzzing with fresh creative energy, long past the shadow of its Soviet past. This guide isn’t just a list of places—it’s an invitation to uncover the essence of Tbilisi. I’ve spotlighted the places I love most: Where to Stay: Design-forward hotels with a nod to tradition. Where to Eat: From cozy bakeries to contemporary Georgian kitchens. What to Explore: Art spaces, quirky theaters, and streets that tell stories. Experiences to Book: Tours and immersive experiences—from food and wine tastings to art walks and cultural excursions—ensuring you connect deeply with the heart of the city. The guide includes a curated map to help you navigate the city with ease, whether you’re here for a quick getaway or a longer stay. This isn’t a checklist—it’s an invitation to explore the hidden charm, creative pulse, and untold stories of a city designed for discovery. Here's a glimpse: • 6 design-led, sustainable hotels • 3 swanky apartment rentals • 6 top spots for coffee and nibbles • 9 lunch spots • 15 dinner spots • 5 evening hotspots • 5 suggested neighborhood walkabouts • 10 must-do/must-see city experiences • 10 handpicked shops • 6 tour suggestions

Stamba Hotel
@saskiaveendorp
A fusion of brutalist architecture and vintage-chic décor in a Tbilisi-based publishing house. Remodeled out of a Soviet-era publishing house smack dab in the middle of Tbilisi's creative district, this stylish industrial-chic abode packs quite a punch. With its 5-story jungle atrium of exposed concrete pillars and a glass-bottomed pool, the outlandishly design-led hotel is a destination in its own right. Spaces celebrate the city's creative energy, with local art boldly mounted on floor-to-ceiling vintage bookshelves, lush foliage spilling down massive concrete pillars, and salvaged printing equipment throughout. Rooms are light-filled and boldly decorated with playful pops of color and bespoke décor. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame expansive terraces overlooking Tbilisi rooftops, while exposed brick walls and red diamond-shaped floor tiles create a soothing atmosphere that balances the authentic with the edgy. Comfy duvet cocooned leather beds are framed with warm wooden furniture, abstract Georgian art, and a seductive freestanding brass tub. Stamba Hotel, part of the Adjara group, is dedicated to sustainable urban and regional development in Georgia.

ROOMS Tbilisi
@saskiaveendorp
A stylish retro-chic hotel in a renovated Soviet publishing house tucked away in the hipster heart of Tbilisi. Set in a former Soviet printing house slap bang in Tbilisi’s buzzing Vera district, the Rooms Hotel packs a punch for its bold design and originality. Spaces are dressed to impress, a fusion of historic architecture, unadorned industrial minimalism, and elegant rough-luxe aesthetics. Floral wallpapered rooms with dark wooden floors, warm mood lighting, and expansive warehouse-style windows feel delightfully inviting. Top it off with soft duvet-cocooned beds, claw-toothed tubs, weathered leather sofas, and pops of dusty green and pale pinks, and you’ll never feel like leaving. And the well-dressed bellhops with their brimless caps and chunky room keys are straight out of a Wes Anderson film. The Rooms Hotel is a fusion of warehouse glam with Parisian charm - a bolthole of personality and design. Rooms are boldly chic, blending original features like salvaged woods, postindustrial windows, and cool industrial fixtures with pops of avant-garde found in floral wallpaper, leather upholstered beds, and wrought iron chandeliers. Lobbies and communal spaces have a warm Provence-chic vibe, with light-filled interiors, natural woods, muted earth tones, floor-to-ceiling bookcases, and weathered leather sofas.

Saskia Veendorp
My name is Saskia, and I'm the Founder of Offbeat Goat, a travel platform for conscious and discerning travelers. We showcase a tightly edited collection of storied places that are aesthetically beautiful, transformative, and have narratives connected to sustainability. Having spent over two decades traveling and working in economic development and humanitarian efforts, I’ve shifted my focus to sustainable travel. Through Offbeat Goat, I act as curator and storyteller, spotlighting destinations that blend aesthetic appeal with positive impact. I know what I like when I see it and feel it—boutique design-led hotels, local artisans, farm-to-table restaurants, creative design spaces, and those behind-the-scenes experiences that make travel come to life. Our sweet spot, however, is finding places that are beautiful inside and out, dedicated to enriching their communities and preserving the environment. When I am not on the road, you'll find me crafting stories, filming, and writing from my current home base in Tbilisi, Georgia. We are excited to share our CityKITs - curated city guides of favourite places to eat, stay and play. Happy trailblazing!
