Tour Recommendations

I recommend taking a guided walking tour of the city to give you an overview of all the famous sights, and the things you might miss if you're going it alone.

For visits to the Colosseum and the Vatican, a guided tour that includes skip-the-line entry tickets is a must.

I recommend booking with Project Expedition over Viator because of their commitment to vetting each tour operator listed on their site.

Context Travel is my go-to for private tours led by expert-level guides.

See & Do

A good walking tour will take you by most of these sights and more.

Spanish Steps
@JessieWestTravel
An iconic location that's beautiful day or night. There's always a buzz of activity here and plenty of shops and restaurants around to grab a seat and enjoy the view. (Just don't sit on the steps!)

Fiumi Fountain (Fountain of the Four Rivers)
@JessieWestTravel
This was my favorite fountain in Rome, and I loved the Piazza Navona where it's located. Beautiful and lined with cafes - perfect spot for having a drink in the evening.

Elephant and Obelisk

A quirky little statue by Bernini that's easy to miss, but one of my faves.

Colosseum
@JessieWestTravel
Is there another place with as much history and legend as the Colosseum in Rome? No matter how many times you've seen pictures or films of this place, being there in person will leave you awestruck.

Pantheon
@JessieWestTravel
It's hard to describe the scale of the Pantheon until you walk inside. Unimaginable engineering and it's still in use as a church today.

Trevi Fountain
@JessieWestTravel
Arrive early to avoid crowds (they'll still be there, but you can try) and bring a coin to toss over your shoulder into the fountain.

Beautifully ornate church that also houses a Caravaggio painting.

Vatican Museums
@JessieWestTravel
You could spend days wandering the Vatican Museums. You'll never see such a collection of beautiful art and sculptures and historical treasures. I highly recommend having a guide show you around, otherwise it's easy to get lost or miss some really important pieces.

Day Trip

For a great day trip I recommend heading to Tivoli to visit the UNESCO sites of Villa d'Este and Villa Adriana.

Villa d'Este
@JessieWestTravel
One of the most beautiful places I've ever been. A mansion overlooking extensive water gardens built on a hillside with fountains that operate solely by ancient ingenuity and gravity.

Hadrian's Villa
@JessieWestTravel
This expansive site is an ancient marvel. Hadrian's "villa" is more like a city unto itself. Though mostly in ruins now, the archaeological features here are impressive and beautiful.

Restaurants

EnOsteria Capolecase
@JessieWestTravel
Great cafe. Try the starter that is sliced omelette in tomato sauce (frittata trippata) - I know it sounds weird, but it's delicious.

Life Ristorante

I dream about the black truffle tasting menu here. And the tiramisu. And the wine. Everything really ❤️

Cielo Terrace

Rooftop bar and restaurant at the Hotel de la Ville. Head here for pre-dinner drinks with a gorgeous view of the city. There's usually a DJ after dark if you want to stick around for music.
