The Best Spots in Edinburgh

The Best Spots in Edinburgh

This is a list of my favourite spots in Edinburgh, as both a tour guide and a graduate of the university. Scotland's capital boasts many iconic sites, from the castle to the new St James shopping centre, but here are some hidden gems you may not have come across.

I have lived, studied, and worked in Edinburgh for over four years. I love the different aspects of the city, and how it can feel old and vibrant at once. As such, I would like to share with you my favourite spots that only a local could know.

Eating

One of Edinburgh's biggest pulls is the myriad coffee shops scattered throughout the city. As easy as it is to jump into Starbucks and order your usual, there is some fun in trying out the different venues. The Milkman and Laila on Cockburn Street get a lot of hype on social media but my favourite is La Barantine. This is a French bakery where you can pick up delicious pastries alongside your morning pick-me-up. I love the macaroons, the raspberry ones are my favourite.

*If you are in need of a quick and reliable coffee, I recommend trying the Starbucks in the Waverly Mall at the train station. It's usually very quiet compared to the other shops nearby!

Next, my absolute favourite restaurant, Chez Jules (I've just realised there's a bit of a theme here). This small but dynamic French restaurant is situated at the bottom of George Street. Make sure to book a table, as you're not guaranteed a walk-in. The best thing about this place is the set-menu, where you can indulge in French classics and not break the bank. My recommendation is the Steak Frites, just make sure not to knock your candle over.

Drinking

I feel I shouldn't share this one, it is probably my favourite place on this list. It's Bramble, a bar tucked away on the lower level of a building on Queen Street. At first, you may walk past it. It's easily done. Only a small plaque outside signals it's a venue, and then you walk down to the basement level to be met with an unassuming brown door. Surely this isn't a bar? Don't turn back. It's a wonderful wee spot. Inside you'll find a cavernous and authentic speak-easy with candlelight and signature cocktails. If you want to impress a date, you can thank me later.

This one is unconventional, but it deserves a place on this list. In my opinion, The Caledonian Picture House is one of the prettiest pubs in the city but it is also a Wetherspoons. It's in an old cinema at the bottom of Lothian Road. The good news is that once you've marvelled at the art deco interior and glided up the stairs, you can order your drinks on the app from the high heavens. It is a bit of a hike going to the bathroom!

Again, my last spot is not an uber-cool independent venue, but it deserves to be shouted about ... from the literal rooftop. Head into Harvey Nichols at St Andrew Square and up the escalators. You'll find the rooftop cafe, and if you secure a cocktail and a table outside, enjoy the view of the Royal Mile rising in front of you.

Spots

This is probably what you came for, the free spots to take in Edinburgh's beauty. Just make sure to keep walking and don't stand in anyone's way! Nothing riles up a local like an ignorant tourist...

The first place we'll discuss is Advocates Close. A 'close' is an old word meaning a narrow side street or alleyway, Edinburgh's Old Town has so many of them no one has an exact figure! This is my favourite way to walk from the Old Town to the New Town, cutting through the Royal Mile and taking you out on Cockburn Street. From here, you can marvel at the skyline of the New Town and take a quick pic if you like (stand to the side, it's pretty but there are plenty like me who use this as way to get around!).

My second hidden gem is Dunbar's Close and garden. I stumbled upon this by accident walking down the Royal Mile. If you're heading to Holyrood, it's on the left-hand side. Here is a secluded and quiet garden that makes you think you've wandered onto the set of Outlander (it was filmed nearby). Perfect if you need a wee breather.

If you're still on the Royal Mile, take a look at Lady Stair's Close. Here you will find the Writers' Museum, but if you don't fancy going in just look around you. If you look down, you'll see some iconic quotes from Scotland's literary figures engraved on the slabs beneath you. This close also makes you feel like you've stepped back in time.

My final spot is less of a spot and more of an activity. You may have heard of Dean Bridge, Stockbridge and Inverleith Park, but I encourage you to keep walking. If you walk along the canal, you can enjoy the resplendence of Edinburgh's architecture in relative peace. The buildings are gorgeous and chances are if you keep your eyes pealed, you'll notice something cool.

Thank you so much for reading, I hope you'll love these spots as much as I do <3
