Traditional Dutch Dishes

Amsterdam is a big enough city that you can find most anything you want to eat. But here are some of the Dutch classics to look for!

Dutch pancakes are a treat! Poffertjes look like mini fluffy pancake bites. Classically, you get them with just a few toppings (butter, syrup, maybe strawberries) but you can also go big and get the works! They’re bites of pillowy goodness that you’ll inhale in 2 minutes!

On the savory end of things, Dutch food leans hearty and cozy, perfect for colder weather. Stamppot is a sort of mashed potato dish with carrots, onion, turnips, or other veggies mixed in. It's often paired with sausages or meatballs as a winter dinner, and you can find it on the menu in most Amsterdam restaurants.

For a bar snack or appetizer, try bitterballen: a sort of meatball that's breaded and fried. Perfect alongside a beer.

We can't not mention cheese; the Dutch are proud of their cheese. Gouda is named after the Dutch town it originated in, so you have to try a bit while you're here!

If you've never tried it, definitely get a slice of appeltaart! It's a taller pie with a thicker, more crumbly crust than the American version. It's so delicious that you'll fight over the last bite if you share.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Amateur Italian, travel advisor, and adventurous eater! I’m a travel creative living in small town northern Italy, and I've been planning travel for over 15 years. I've lived on three continents and visited over 40 countries, so I'm passionate about helping travelers experience the best of a location, no matter where! I love both/and travel: I want to see the big sights AND the local hangouts, the big cities AND the small towns. I’d love to help you do it too! If you’re going to Rome for the first time, you don’t need me to tell you to see the Colosseum. But you might want me to tell you if it’s better as a guided tour or on your own, what add-on’s are worth the money, and what are the extra secret things your ticket can get you! My favorite part of travel is eating well: finding the local haunts, tasting a new wine, and trying the local dishes. Amazing food doesn't have to be expensive: sometimes the best of a place is in the street food! But if it is a splurge, I'll make sure it's worth every penny. I'd love to work with you to create the trip of your dreams!
