Parma has some gorgeous architecture. I love the cathedral (free entry), and the city is known for two theaters from two different eras.

What to see in Parma

The historic part of the city’s architecture fits the Emilia Romagna style: colorful but not loud, with plenty of columns and covered porticoes.

It’s easy to meander for an hour or two and soak up the city, as well as check out a museum or tour of a theater.

Parma’s Cathedral/duomo is absolutely gorgeous! Free to enter so definitely worth a visit.

Teatro Regio

Beautiful historic theater built in the early 1800’s. It’s also famous because Verdi was born nearby and staged nearly all of his operas here first. It’s open to touring but you need to book in advance! Reasonably priced - 7€ per person as of spring 2023.

Teatro Farnese

One of the first moderns styel theaters in the world! Largely recreated - much of it was damaged from WWII bombing. It’s part of the Palazzo della pilotta, meaning it’s a combo ticket for this several small museums within the historic fortress!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Amateur Italian, travel advisor, and adventurous eater! I’m a travel creative living in small town northern Italy, and I've been planning travel for over 15 years. I've lived on three continents and visited over 40 countries, so I'm passionate about helping travelers experience the best of a location, no matter where! I love both/and travel: I want to see the big sights AND the local hangouts, the big cities AND the small towns. I’d love to help you do it too! If you’re going to Rome for the first time, you don’t need me to tell you to see the Colosseum. But you might want me to tell you if it’s better as a guided tour or on your own, what add-on’s are worth the money, and what are the extra secret things your ticket can get you! My favorite part of travel is eating well: finding the local haunts, tasting a new wine, and trying the local dishes. Amazing food doesn't have to be expensive: sometimes the best of a place is in the street food! But if it is a splurge, I'll make sure it's worth every penny. I'd love to work with you to create the trip of your dreams!
