Monti is Rome's largest rione and one of the most popular and renowned among both locals and tourists.

Initially, Monti was a full-fledged part of Ancient Rome, and densely populated. However, during the Middle Ages, it became largely deserted due to lack of a water system and a decline of the political significance of the area. Fortunately, during the Renaissance, Monti experienced a revival. Its population grew again, and by the late 1800s is was flourishing, although the 19th-century developments disrupted much of Monti's medieval layout. Today, Monti is celebrated as one of the most authentic and characteristic Roman neighborhoods, known for its narrow streets, ancient churches, lively squares, and hipster vibes.

➊ Keep at least one day to visit Monti and its attractions if you are a first-timer in Rome. It won't be enough, but a good starting point.

➊ Summers in Rome can be excruciatingly hot and not the best time to visit some of the best attractions in Monti such as the Roman Fora. If you can, prefer winter or spring.
