A Bit About Me

I'm Emma, the founder of Impala Adventures and a travel enthusiast with a love for luxury and a thirst for adventure. With years of globetrotting under my belt—from the icy expanse of Antartica to the sun-soaked beaches of the Maldives and multiple countries in Africa—I’ve experienced the world in all its thrilling diversity, and now I’m here to help you do the same.

I believe that travel should be more than just a holiday—it should be a story worth telling. Whether you’re dreaming of sipping champagne at the finest houses in France, setting sail on a luxurious cruise, or pushing your limits in the world’s most extreme marathons, I’ve got the expertise to make it happen.

Why go on a Safari?

Embarking on an adventure of a lifetime with a safari! Imagine the thrill of spotting the Big Five in their natural habitat, witnessing herds of wildebeest crossing the Serengeti, or marveling at the golden glow of an African sunset. A safari is more than just a trip—it's a chance to connect with nature, experience diverse cultures, and create unforgettable memories. Whether you're tracking majestic elephants in Botswana, exploring lush landscapes in Kenya, or cruising the waterways of the Okavango Delta, a safari promises excitement, wonder, and breathtaking beauty at every turn.

Clothing

When on a safari you need to dress appropriately, you will be bouncing around in the back of a 4 x 4 or relaxing at your lodgings (hopefully with a view of a water hole).  Either way its important you have the right clothing!

The most important this is to pack light, neutral-colored clothing.   Stick to beige, khaki, olive, and light brown to blend in with the environment and avoid attracting insects. Dark colors (like black or blue) can attract tsetse flies. Also take my advice on this one- white gets dirty very quickly as its very dusty out there!

Shoes

The best footwear for a safari depends on the activities planned and the terrain, but comfort, durability, and practicality are key. Here are the top options:

1. Lightweight Hiking Boots

Ideal for bush walks or uneven terrain.  Provides ankle support and protection against thorns or rocky paths.  Look for breathable and waterproof options.

2. Sturdy Walking Shoes

Great for game drives and light walking.  Comfortable and easy to slip on and off.

3. Closed-Toe Sandals

Perfect for relaxing around the lodge or during warm afternoons.  Protects feet while keeping them cool.

4. Casual Slip-Ons

Easy to wear for lounging or short distances around camp.

What to Avoid:

Tip:

Break in new footwear before your trip to avoid blisters, and pack comfortable socks (light for the heat, thicker for cooler mornings). Having the right shoes will ensure you’re ready for any adventure! 🥾🐾

Mid Layers

The next stage that you need, is a decent fleeces or jumper  for slightly cooler temperatures when you are on the move.  You will no doubt have one already in your cupboard  however i have linked below my favourite if you want what I use

Trousers

A decent pair of walking trousers is required, I personally recommend trousers that have multi purpose, where you can zip off the lower legs so they double up as shorts!  This can be very useful as early mornings can be a little chilly, therefore as the sun rises with the temperature you can convert into shorts.

Top Layer

Waterproof- It seems strange to need a coat when visiting a continent such as Africa which is famed for its heat, however I always recommend taking a light waterproof- it does rain there!  Early mornings the temperatures also drop so a light top layer works wonders!  I always make sure to buy one that packs down small (and preferably in its own built in bag)

Also depending on your overall locations, a decent puffer jacket doesn't go a miss fora around the camp fire at night, or late night water hole watching.

Hats

A wide brimmed hat is a must to protect yourself from the intense African sun.  A wide brimmed  sunhat will provide full coverage and also make sure it folds up.  Another must is polarized sunglasses to reduce glare.

Binoculars & Cameras

There is no question that your safari will be spectacular and you will no doubt want to take a million photographs.  Being realistic an average smartphone these days will take perfectly adequate photos.  If you are hugely into photography then by all means take all your photography equipment, however please remember that in most locations drones are NOT allowed.  Cameras with a long range lens will provide memorable photographs, however this is an areas where I not an expert.

One thing I do recommend is a set of binoculars.  I found them hugely beneficial, after al when on safari you can only stick to the roads, animals don't have the same rules.  Also some large cats love to hide in trees, and don't get me started on the birds! You will see so much more detail, it really is worth it.  The below pair are small, lightweight and waterproof.

Insect Repellent

This is an absolute must for any safari adventure, the last thing you want is nasty bites.  I have tried and tested lots of different ones over the years an I find Jungle Formula to be the absolute best

Sun Cream

It is obviously common sense that you will need to protect your skin against the African sun, i recommend using a minimum of factor 50 protection.  However the one element people often forget it there lips- a UV lip balm is an absolute must

Essential Items for any trip

If you suffer with motion sickness, then I thoroughly recommend these motion sickness patches, the roads in Africa are not maintained like roads in Europe.  Affectionately know as an 'African massage' you will get bounced around in alot of pot holed ridden roads!

A multi charger- covering every kind of outlet and offering both USB and USC fittings!  This keeps you covered anywhere is the world and particularly somewhere with few outlets or potentially no usbs.

A power bank is essential,  you will be taking so many photographs and videos which will wipe your battery- keep it topped up with a portable power bank.  Don't run out of battery just as you spot a pride of lions!  Also depending on your lodgings, if you are camping for example, you may not have power!

Luggage

Something I started doing a few years ago was tracking my luggage, popping an air tag in each item of luggage that I could track from my phone, just in case god forbid a piece ever got left behind.  The peace of mind is totally worth it!

One other item that is so simple but my goodness the difference it made- a cap for my toothbrush!  I am often a traveller that moves around so constantly repacking my things- my wash bag used to get so slimy from a wet toothbrush- not anymore! They also help protect from dust- you wouldbe surprised how dusty your belongings get on a safari and nobody wants sand in their teeth.

Another item that revolutionised by travel packing was packing cubes, particularly if you are moving from place to place, keeping your clean items from your dirty items and just being able to lay your hands so easily on what you need- they are an organisers dream!  Also always buy compression ones- you can fit so much more in your bag

As previously mentioned, safaris are dusty!  To keep your belongings dust free you need a decent bag, a soft sided duffle is what I would recommend and there is nothing better in my opinion that a North Face duffel, mine has been around the world with me and still going strong.  They come in various different sizes, my advice is to go for a forgiving colour!  AN investment you will not regret.

You will also need a small day pack to take out with you on safari to store you water bottle, camera etc.  Again I always opt for my North Face backpack!  When picking one, opt for a sensible colour (again- dust!) and one that is water repellent (you will want to use it for more than just a safari so buy an all rounder).  The below one does all of this and more, with useful pockets and not too big.

Water Bottles

A reusable water bottle is a must for any trip (and every day life) my personal favourite is the water to go bottles as they have a built in replaceable filter, the 750ml size is perfect for fitting into bags.  The inbuilt filter allows you to drink any water through it, even puddle water!  However please bear in mind it is a filter bottle so please don't put juice or hydration tablets in these bottles- it will filter in straight out! At the time of writing code AD20 should get you 20% off

Hydration tablets are a must for me in every day life, but even more so when I travel So simple to have one a day but please don't use them in your filter bottles!
