6 Best Things To Do In Chengdu, China
If you’re travelling to China, having a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is essential to access most websites and apps, such as Google, Instagram, Whatsapp and Youtube, without restrictions. I have personally used Astrill VPN for years and can highly recommend it for its reliability, fast speeds and excellent customer service. 1. Chengdu Giant Panda Base
Here are some essential tips to ensure you have the best day: arrive early before 8:30am to see the pandas active and during feeding time, try to go on a weekday to avoid the crowds, and finally, be prepared to have no personal space, because this is China and there are always lots of people.
2. Wuhou Shrine
Wuhou Shrine is a beautifully landscaped temple complex dedicated to Zhuge Liang, one of China’s most famous historical figures. The shrine is also connected to the vibrant Jinli Old Street where you can find many shops and street food stalls.
3. Try Sichuan Cuisine
Chengdu is a food lover’s paradise and spicy Sichuan cuisine is known worldwide. There are actually many food tours available throughout the city. The signature Sichuan hotpot is an absolute must-try, as well as the Dan Dan Noodles. If you’re not used to spicy food, definitely start with milder hot pot bases and ask for less spicy!
If you are vegan or vegetarian, fear not! You don’t have to miss out on the local food experience, because there are many vegan hotpot restaurants. Even if you don’t go to a specific vegan restaurant, you can always choose the ingredients you want in your hotpot and avoid the meat.
4. U37 Creative Park
This isn’t usually on the list of best things to do in Chengdu, but I loved exploring the colourful street art and finding the vibey cafes. It’s the perfect place to get inspired and pick up unique souvenirs, or just relax and hang out with friends. Keep an eye out for rotating art exhibitions and pop up events!
5. Taikoo Li
It’s so interesting to walk past the luxury brands and then see an ancient temple next door. Explore a little further to find trendy coffee shops and even a skate park. Visit in the evening when the lights turn on to experience the magical atmosphere, and find a rooftop bar or restaurant for stunning views of the area.
6. Experience the Nightlife
Chengdu’s nightlife scene is as diverse and crazy as its cuisine, and that’s why experiencing it is one of the best things you can do during your visit.
