Ultimate Guide to Morocco
Marrakesh
The Red City - Marrakesh has another worldly allure to it. And I must say - it is unique. Walking around the spacious main square - the Jema'a el Fna surrounded by snack charmers, monkeys, juice stands, red buildings, and the 1000 year old Koutobia Mosque presents you with a mix of stimuli that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. It's a pulsating showcase of Arab World energy and souqs, European style and glamour, and African vibrancy all combined into one big pot of harira soup.
Some people tend to be hostile towards Marrakesh. In recent years, Marrakesh joined the ranks of Paris, Barcelona, London, and other cities as part of the European jet set. In comparison to these cities, it's easy to understand: hawkers in the square and souqs, immense congestion, motorbikes zooming past you in the Medina making you think you just dodged death. It's a far cry from Europe, and it's understandable if the North African market culture makes it not to your taste. As a result, the closest city I can think of to Marrakesh is Jerusalem: you may not like it but my goodness it is a one of a kind city.
When visiting Marrakesh, you should allot at least three nights, maybe four if you want to take a day trip. In order to have the best trip you can, I'd recommend reading my summary on what to expect in Marrakesh, and tips for a great trip!
