Because of their location at the south of the South Island the Catlins are often skipped by travellers in order to save time. But they are so worth it.
The region is NZ's hidden gem and off the beaten track as it's quite remote with the rugged and wild landscape. Explore waterfalls, beautiful beaches, lighthouses and wildlife like the rare Hector Dolphins or the yellow-eyed penguins.

Nugget Point Lighthouse

The 10-20 minute walk to the lighthouse leads along the cliffs and there's some nice spots to shoot some cool pictures on the way.
Behind the lighthouse there's a viewing platform and you can look down on the "nuggets", the rocks in the water. An incredible view and there's also loads of seals basking in then sun on the rocks.
This spot is so recommendable!
Leaving the lighthouse, on the way down we had an amazing view on a white beach.

🌏 I'm backpacking solo around the world since 2017, exploring new places and cultures. I love to travel off the beaten path as I think this is the best way to experience local life and discover places away from mass tourism.
🗻 I've lived in New Zealand for 2,5 years, exploring this beautiful country in my van and I've also lived in Australia and Uruguay for one year each.
🥥 I always try to spend as much time as possible in one country to be able to explore it thoroughly. The first thing I usually do is wandering the streets to get a feel for the place, visiting local markets and also trying all the food.
🏞️🏝️ I love the outdoors, hiking, chasing waterfalls, driving around with the scooter, scuba diving and snorkeling.
