Trieste is great for a weekend getaway or a day trip! It's also unique in Italy for its position so close to Austria and Slovenia.

Trieste has changed nationalities a ton in its two-thousand-year history. While Roman during the Roman empire, it transitioned into the Byzantine empire and then was Austro-Hungarian until after WWI. You'll see that Austrian influence reflected in the architecture and food, making Trieste unique within Italy.

Getting There

Trieste is a day trip option from Venice. It’s on the longer side of what I’d recommend if you’re traveling by train for a day trip, but it’s still doable if you’re short on time! If you have access to a car it’s a very easy day trip. If you have time, make it a weekend and add in a day trip to a nearby spot or give yourself time to sunbathe and swim!

My recommendation is to go by train. There’s options almost every hour, and they can get you there quickly and easily. It’s around a 2.5 hour train ride, so long for a day trip but easy for a 1-2 night overnight.

If you'd rather, driving is a good option. It's 1 hour 45 minutes from Venice. Having a car makes it easy to do things like see Miramare Castle, add on a day trip, or build it into a larger road trip including Slovenia and Croatia!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Amateur Italian, travel advisor, and adventurous eater! I’m a travel creative living in small town northern Italy, and I've been planning travel for over 15 years. I've lived on three continents and visited over 40 countries, so I'm passionate about helping travelers experience the best of a location, no matter where! I love both/and travel: I want to see the big sights AND the local hangouts, the big cities AND the small towns. I’d love to help you do it too! If you’re going to Rome for the first time, you don’t need me to tell you to see the Colosseum. But you might want me to tell you if it’s better as a guided tour or on your own, what add-on’s are worth the money, and what are the extra secret things your ticket can get you! My favorite part of travel is eating well: finding the local haunts, tasting a new wine, and trying the local dishes. Amazing food doesn't have to be expensive: sometimes the best of a place is in the street food! But if it is a splurge, I'll make sure it's worth every penny. I'd love to work with you to create the trip of your dreams!
