Essential Guide to Porto: A mix of must-see spots and less-traveled local favorites
Christie | Adventures of Cricket
Porto is my favorite city in Portugal (and quite possibly my favorite city in Europe). I've spent over 3 months here in the last two years, which has given me the unique opportunity to fully experience all Porto has to offer. But I also know what it's like to only have two or three days to try to see & do it all, and why I have created this guide for you. I've highlighted all the best spots, and added in some local favorites, to help you maximize your time in this incredibly vibrant city!
Rather than have a rigid, scheduled checklist of places, I've tried to group locations together that would make sense if walking around the city. If you start the day where I've suggested, you'll have many options along the way from start to finish. Use the map icon to toggle between the guide and the map, or use the directions tab in each location description to link you to directly to Google maps.
This guide includes:
🔹Suggested sites and activities for 3 days in Porto, thoughtfully & geographically grouped together to help maximize your time in the city.
🔹A mix of the "typical" spots to see, as well as some less-traveled places to add something different & unique to your experience.
🔹Tips and insights given are from my own personal experiences from spending over 3 months in this amazing city. This is not just a generic laundry list of an itinerary!
And obviously you'll take lunch, wine (!!) and dinner breaks along the way. I didn't include restaurant options here, as I have an entire guide on just food! You will definitely want to check it out, so I'll link it below! ⬇️

Jardim das Oliveiras
@adventuresofcricket
You would never know there is an ugly parking garage under this beautiful green space! The shopping center at street level features a green space on its roof, full of gorgeous olive trees and a fun bar called Base. Locals and tourists alike come here to enjoy the sunshine and the perfect views of Clerigos Tower.

Câmara Municipal do Porto
@adventuresofcricket
Situated at the top of Avenida dos Aliados is the city hall of Porto. Here you will find the famous blue Porto city sign (a fun photo op). Currently (November 2023), there is major construction going on in this area, as the city is adding a new Metro line. Most sidewalks are open, but parts of the streets are closed. But don't let it deter you from at least walking around!

McDonald's
@adventuresofcricket
Yes, McDonald's Imperial made the list, not necessarily for its culinary prowess, but for the historic building it is located in. Known as one of the most beautiful McDondald's in the world, it's worth stepping inside for a peek at it's beautiful stained glass and crystal chandeliers. Plus it's always fun to see different menu options at McDonald's around the world. This one serves soup and beer!

Porto São Bento
@adventuresofcricket
Whether you are traveling by train or not, popping into the Sao Bento station is a must. The stunning blue and white azulejos and the stained glass is breathtaking. It's always buzzing with people, but it's worth the visit!
⭐️ Tip: If you go in the early evening, the sunlight coming through the front glass is magical!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Christie | Adventures of Cricket
Hi! I'm Christie, and I actually love to plan and research trips! Over the last 25 years, I have travelled to 30 countries, with a large focus on Europe. Since February 2022, I've spent a total of 15 months slow and solo traveling around Portugal, and would love to share what I've learned along the way. Slow travel has given me the unique opportunity to really get to know a place, immerse myself in the culture of the local community, and experience some off-the-beaten-path adventures!
If asked about my travel style, I would consider myself a semi-budget traveler. I LOVE a good deal (and travel hacking with points & miles), but I am more than willing to spend money on a delicious meal or an unforgettable experience. I am a big fan of the "loose itinerary." I appreciate experiencing the top things to do in a city, but I have found that the ability to stay open-minded and flexible can often lead to some of the most memorable travel experiences!
So if you are feeling overwhelmed with planning and research and details, you are in the right spot! Let my experience help you take the guesswork out of travel planning and let's design the trip of your dreams! Happy travels!
