Only in Oahu: 4 Day Itinerary for the Island of Oahu, HI
Where to Stay?
I would recommend staying near Honolulu on your first visit for easy access to the Pearl Harbor Historical Site, lots of restaurants and things to do, close proximity to the airport (especially if you do not plan on renting a car!), etc.; however, if some of these things are not as important to you, and you are there more so for the best beaches, I would recommend the North Shore. It is not nearly as large and commercialized, which we liked. Since we already experienced the city on our first trip, we would definitely choose to stay near the North Shore if we ever go back. Just keep in mind that your options for accommodations and hotels will be much more limited- you may could try going the AirBnb route more so here though! I will attach the hotel we stayed in during our time in Honolulu! I will also include at the bottom some other hotel options in the area (but I have not personally stayed at these, and there are several to choose from!)
*Do keep in mind that a lot of hotels do have parking structures for their guests, but many of them charge a steep nightly rate to park your car there. Since we had a rental car, this was one of our large costs unfortunately. Just be prepared for this expense as it is not included in the hotel rate usually.
When to go?
The best time to visit Oahu is definitely during shoulder season when you will experience milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Shoulder season is typically late spring and early fall for many places, and Oahu is not much different. I would recommend April-early June and September- early December. Like many places, the summer will bring an influx of people and a spike in the heat. We visited in the middle of May, and the weather was great! We did get a little rain, but none of our plans were ever altered by the weather. The beaches were a little crowded at times, but I don't know that you will ever have any of the pristine Hawaiian beaches completely to yourself. Do keep in mind that June is the driest month, and December sees the most rainfall.
