A Week on the Greek Island of Skiathos with Kids and car-free
Where is Skiathos?
Skiathos is a tiny island, about 12 km long and 6 km wide, located in the Aegean Sea near the Greek mainland. Despite its small size, it has an international airport Skiathos International Airport Alexandros Papadiamantis (JSI), and budget airline Ryanair flies here from both Prague and Vienna – which is how we got there!
Why is this Great?
Everything is close by. There are no long, exhausting transfers from the airport to your accommodation – the farthest point on the island is only about 25 minutes away. The airport is tucked away in the hilly terrain, so even staying just 15 minutes from the airport, we didn't notice any noise at all. From our part of the world, the flight is under 2 hours.
Thanks to the short distances, we felt confident planning outings with small children. We managed two half-day trips and one full-day trip, all using the very reliable public transport – but I’m getting ahead of myself. 😊
Getting Around Skiathos by Bus
As I mentioned earlier, the island has a great public bus system. Some buses are low-floor, others are classic coaches, but there’s no need to worry even with a stroller. Each bus has a driver and a ticket conductor, who are always ready to help with strollers or luggage.
The fare is €2 per ride, regardless of the distance (except for trips to the airport, which cost €3).
