Stockholm Food and Coffee Guide
Specialty Coffee
This is a place that is very close to my heart. It is the place that introduced me to specialty coffee and has changed my complete outlook of coffee itself. I still remember the coffee that turned me, it was an El Salvador natural as a cappuccino that taste like milk chocolate and coffee in a cup. My favourite coffee spot in town.
Specialty coffee roaster
Standout Coffee in Stockholm is one of the finest coffee roasters in the city and maybe even in the world. They have a fine selection of specialty and competition-level coffees to choose from. There are a couple of cafes in the city that serve their coffee so you can try them out too, I am listing one of the cafes below.
Cookies
Stockholm is lucky to have Sponge Cookies. Mark who used to be a pastry chef at some of the finest 1 star and 2 star Michelin star restaurants in London brings his experience in the form of these beautiful cookies that will leave a lasting impression.
Fika
In Stockholm, you cannot leave without having fika and you definitely cannot leave without trying one of the most decorated bakeries in town serving fresh Kanelbullars, Vaniljbulle, pain au chocolat, and croissants that are to die for.
Brunch/Breakfast
One thing I have felt wanting in Stockholm is better brunch and breakfast spots. Most places serve quite one-dimensional dishes like frallas, avocado toasts, eggs benedict, and so on. Älskade Traditioner moves away from that serving savory waffles with some amazing fillings. One of my favourites is the spicy chicken.
Swedish food
There are a lot of fancy places serving Swedish food and they are all quite good. But for something a lot more affordable but still at a high quality, Tennstoppet fits the bill. Tourists that I have taken there have enjoyed the food and the vibe and it is definitely a must visit.
Burgers
One of my favorite burger spots not just in Stockholm but the world over is Funky Chicken Food Truck. With queues that can be in stretches, this is a popular spot even though it is out of town. Take a nice boat ride out of Östermalm to Nacka, enjoy the scenery and get here for the best burgers of your life.
Pizza
This is a tough one and it keeps changing regularly. So I will list some of my favorites here. Pizzas are subjective from what I have seen as people have different favorites based on preference. Even in my friends' group, there is a huge divide on everyone's top places. Some of the finest are Magari, Savoj, 800 grader, and Deglabbet, a fine list in itself. One place though has trumped all of them for me for their much-improved dough from my first visit, and that is Baravedugns pizza. It is slightly out of town but worth the trip.
Pasta
This is a place that is close to my heart for the people and the food. The price for the quality and quantity is insane. There is very little chance you might get a better bowl of pasta anywhere. Freshly made on a daily basis with some fine ingredients, this place serves Sicily on a bowl. Unfortunately they had an issue with a fire and had to shut down for renovations but by the time someone reads this, I am hoping they will be back open because there isn't a better pasta place in town and there certainly isn't another one I would try.
Indian Food
There are a lot of Indian restaurants in town but most of them will not be recommended by the Indians too. There are two however that definitely standout and I will list them both as they serve vastly different food and also dishes that you will not typically find in other places. First is Pataka, a more traditional Indian restaurant that serves a gorgeous Makki ki Roti and Saag Mutton that is an absolute favourite of mine. Their biriyanis are also amazing.
Second place on my list is run by people who are basically family to me now but I am not biased in my recommendation. Try out Aama Himalayan Kitchen and you will realize how good Momos can be and how they could give any dumpling place in town a run for their money. This is also possibly the only place where you can get authentic Indian Chai.
Peruvian food
A place that I went in with a lot of expectations on my first trip. It was around the time when a lot of restaurants in Lima, Peru were being listed in the top restaurants in the world and put Peruvian food on the map. Checa met and exceeded all my expectations and everyone with me that day. The ingredients, the flavour, the texture, everything about their dishes were gorgeous. A nice cozy place that also serves a lot of nice drinks, Checa is one of my favourite spots for a special occassion.
Poke Bowls
A place that I frequent for lunch for their delicious Korean Fried Chicken that is fried in an airfryer. With some delicious fresh side in the form of pickled radish, onions, cucumber and mayo. They also have homemade kimchi that is super good and you can buy some for home as well.
Persian food
Palestinian food
If you are a fan of middle eastern cuisine, then you will love Palestinian food. It tastes a lot more fresher, bold, and some nice meats that melt in your mouth. Sweet O Salti Restaurang gives you an amazing experience to explore Palestinian cuisine and you will definitely go back for more.
Thai
There are very few places that serve Khao Soi in Stockholm. In fact I think Chao Na might be the only one that might be authentic. The owners are from the highlands in Thailand where Khao Soi comes from and the flavour that the bowl of Khao Soi has is amazing. For the price, the portions are generous and the taste is much better than other thai places. Try their beef, you will not be disappointed.
Ramen
There are a lot of Ramen places in town and it is kind of hard to pick one. All of them are very good but one place I go back to on a regular basis is Kapibara ramen for their Tantamen.
Sushi
Columbian food
Coffee Express Sweden Colombia serves a delicious brunch spread that is huge in size with some amazing flavors. Their meat is amazing, the combination with the fresh ingredients like avocado and refried beans takes it to the next level.
Mexican food
Xulo is possible one place I always go to for Mexican food. Recommended by my mexican friends it is possibly one of the most authentic spots to try mexican food in Stockholm.
Vietnamese food
A vietnamese place that I keep going back to is Vi-Na Fresh. Very close to Central Stockholm, this restaurant serves some very traditional vietnamese cuisine which also reminds me of some of the dishes we get back home in Kerala, India.
Kebab
A lot of places have come up in Stockholm serving kebabs. And one of my favourites is Dede's kebab.
Chinese food/Vegan food
This is a very interesting one as you generally do not associate chinese food with vegan food but Lao Wai is just that. I asked the owners why they went with vegan chinese food as it is not something seen a lot and they said they took this step for the environment. Crazy flavours, amazing ingredients and delicious food.
Icecream/Gelato
There are a few places and I will choose two for gelato and one for softserve icecream as it is kind of hard to choose between them. Whichever you are close to, you can go there and you will not be disappointed.
