Why Renting a Car is the Best Way to Explore Aruba

Upon arriving at Queen Beatrix International Airport, you’ll find yourself steps away from all major car rental shops, making it incredibly convenient to pick up your vehicle and start your adventure right away. Booking your car online in advance is highly recommended to ensure a smooth and quick process when you land.

Aruba’s small size means that distances are short, making a rental car the best way to see the island. For example, you can drive from Palm Beach to Eagle Beach in just 10 minutes or reach Arikok National Park from Oranjestad in around 20 minutes. Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore Aruba at your own pace, without relying on limited public transportation.

Instead of splurging on expensive chain hotels, opting for an Airbnb in Noord offers both affordability and convenience. Noord is perfectly located near the island’s most popular attractions, including beautiful beaches like Palm Beach and Eagle Beach, as well as great dining spots. The area is known for its calm, residential feel, making it a peaceful retreat after a day of exploring.

I personally recommend this lovely Airbnb in Noord, where I stayed during my trip. It was the ideal base to explore the island, providing comfort and easy access to all the must-visit spots.   

From exploring the rugged beauty of Arikok National Park to lounging on pristine beaches, savoring local cuisine, and diving into a lively cultural scene, this island has it all. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or excitement, Aruba’s unique charm makes it a must-visit destination.

Start your day with a coffee fix at one of my favorite spots, Santos Coffee with Soul - Casa del Mar. 

After breakfast, it’s time to beach hop! Kick things off at Druif Beach, where you can admire the iconic Divi trees. You’ll find free parking and can stroll over to Divi Beach for a relaxing swim and some sunbathing. Once you’ve soaked up enough rays, hop back in the car and head to Eagle Beach, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and the famous Fofoti tree. With free public parking here as well, it’s the perfect spot for a leisurely swim.

When hunger strikes, lunch at the hidden gem Poké-Ono Azure is an experience you won’t want to miss. Tucked away in the Azure Residences condo, just let the gatekeepers know you’re dining there to gain access. 

For a scenic afternoon, drive to the California Lighthouse, located in the Arashi Area. Free parking is available, and for just USD 5, you can climb to the top for sweeping views of the island. The ascent is narrow and might not be ideal for those who are claustrophobic, but the stunning scenery from above is worth the climb.   

Wrap up your day at Arashi Beach, where you can settle in for a breathtaking sunset. Grab a cold beer, relax on the soft sand, and watch the sky change colors over the sea. To end the night, heading back to your Airbnb for a cozy, homemade dinner is the perfect way to wind down after a day of adventure.   

Day 2: Conquer the Wilds of Arikok National Park

Fuel up with a hearty breakfast at your accommodation, then pack essentials for your adventure through Arikok National Park—water, snacks, and a simple lunch if you’d like. Don’t forget your hat, sunscreen, and comfortable clothes for hiking. There’s no food or water in the park, so be prepared!   

While many say an organized tour is the best way to explore Arikok because rental cars aren’t allowed on some roads, I’ll show you how easy it is to visit on your own! You can divide your day into two parts: hiking to the stunning Conchi Natural Pool and taking a scenic drive through some of the park’s top sights.   

First, drive to the San Fuego Entrance to purchase your ticket ($20 USD), then head to Parking Rancho near Daimari Beach. Leave your car at the top of the hill, lace up your sneakers, and start the 30-minute hike. The trail is steep and rocky, so carry only the essentials—water and snacks. The first stop is Daimari Beach, a rugged beauty where swimming is prohibited, but the views are unforgettable.

Continue through the White Dunes to reach Boca Keto, a wild and windswept stretch of coast. Push on through the rocky terrain, and you’ll arrive at the jewel of the hike: Conchi Natural Pool. Cool off with a swim in this volcanic pool, but be cautious—the rocks are slippery and the tide changes quickly. Follow the park guide’s advice and soak in the incredible surroundings.   

After the hike back to your car, enjoy a relaxing lunch with views of Daimari Beach before beginning the second leg of your day.

Return to the San Fuego Entrance and start your scenic drive. Your first stop is the dramatic Boca Prins, where you can admire the windswept coastline. From there, head to Fontein Cave to see ancient rock drawings. Continue to Quadirikiri Cave, where a short climb leads you into a cavern filled with natural light. Before you leave, check out the panoramic views from the small hill nearby—it’s a hidden gem!

End your drive at the impressive Vader Piet Wind Farm, where towering turbines line the landscape. As you make your way out of the park, enjoy the thrill of having conquered Arikok’s wild beauty.

After a day of adventure, treat yourself to dinner at Zeerover, one of my favorite spots for fresh seafood in Aruba. Enjoy your feast with stunning waterfront views as the sun sets, making it the ideal way to cap off an unforgettable day in Arikok National Park.


 

Start your day with a refreshing breakfast at Dushi Delicious in Oranjestad. Known for its fresh smoothies, this spot is the perfect way to kick off a day of adventure. Don’t miss their creamy avocado toast or indulgent French toast—it’s the fuel you’ll need for exploring Aruba’s southern shores.   

Next, head to Baby Beach, my personal favorite and, in my opinion, the best beach in Aruba. Its calm, shallow waters and soft white sand make it perfect for a morning of relaxation and swimming. With its natural lagoon protecting the beach, it’s ideal for snorkeling or just floating peacefully. Bring along a simple lunch and snacks so you can enjoy a full morning without worrying about food. Set up under the shade, take a swim, and soak in the beauty of this serene beach.   

After your beach time, drive back to San Nicolas, a town bursting with local culture and vibrant street art. Take a casual walk around to admire the colorful murals that line the streets, a perfect backdrop for photos. Stop by the San Nicolas Community Museum for a glimpse into the island’s history, and stroll through the local markets for unique souvenirs. This charming town is an essential stop for anyone wanting to experience the artistic heart of Aruba.   

To wrap up your day, head back to Noord and indulge in a delicious dinner at Sultan Restaurant and Hookah Lounge, home to the best Arabian cuisine on the island. Whether you opt for the lamb and beef shawarmas or go all in with the family platter for two (a great way to sample a bit of everything), you’re in for a treat. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a day of sun and exploration.   

Spend your final day exploring Oranjestad, the colorful and lively capital of Aruba. Start your adventure with a leisurely walking tour of the city center, where colonial architecture meets modern island life. The heart of the city is bustling with activity, and it’s the perfect place to soak up the local culture.

Begin your walk at the Royal Plaza Mall, a striking pink building right by the waterfront. Its Dutch-Caribbean architecture is Instagram-worthy, and inside you’ll find an array of shops selling everything from local crafts to designer goods. From there, wander over to Wilhelmina Park, a peaceful green space along the coast, where you can relax by the sea and admire the statue of Queen Wilhelmina.   

Next, make your way to Fort Zoutman, Aruba’s oldest building. Explore the Historical Museum, which offers a fascinating look into the island’s past. Just a short walk away, you’ll find Renaissance Mall, a luxury shopping destination with high-end brands and duty-free shops. Even if you’re not shopping, it’s worth a stroll through to see its stylish interior.   

One of the best ways to get around the city is by hopping on the Oranjestad tram. This charming open-air streetcar takes you through the main shopping areas and gives you a different perspective of the town. Plus, it’s free! The tram makes several stops, including at Plaza Daniel Leo, a picturesque square surrounded by brightly painted buildings. Take a moment here to snap some photos and enjoy a coffee at one of the nearby cafes.

Wrap up your walking tour at the Seaport Village Mall, located near the marina. It’s a great spot to grab a souvenir or enjoy a meal by the water while watching the boats come and go. If you’re still in the mood for sightseeing, take a walk along the waterfront promenade and enjoy the views of the harbor.   

Oranjestad’s vibrant streets, historical landmarks, and inviting cafes make it the perfect way to end your trip, giving you a taste of the island’s local charm and culture.

Essential Tips for a Fun & Budget-Friendly Aruba Adventure

Stay connected by getting a local SIM card at the airport or any Digicel or Setar store in Oranjestad. They offer affordable prepaid plans, perfect for GPS, calls, and social media. Most tourist areas also have free Wi-Fi, but a local SIM ensures you’re connected anywhere on the island.

Stock up on snacks and essentials at larger supermarkets like Super Food or Ling & Sons, which offer a wide variety of international and local products. Prices tend to be more affordable than convenience stores in tourist areas, so it’s best to do a big shop early on your trip.

The official currency is the Aruban Florin (AWG), but US dollars are widely accepted across the island. Credit cards are also a convenient way to pay, and ATMs are plentiful. However, it’s a good idea to carry some cash, especially for small purchases at local markets or beachside kiosks.

Fuel up your rental car at one of the many gas stations around the island. Prices can be a bit higher than in other places, but you won’t need to fill up often. Be sure to choose a station where attendants fill up your car for you—self-service is not common.

Tipping in Aruba is customary but not mandatory. Restaurants often add a service charge to the bill, but if they don’t, a 10–15% tip is appreciated. Taxi drivers and tour guides also appreciate a small tip for their services.

In most tourist areas, parking is free or very affordable. However, in Oranjestad, certain streets require you to pay for parking (look for blue signs). Download the Parking Aruba app to easily manage payments.
