Here’s how I spent 24 hours in Budapest for under €50

Dohány Street Synagogue: My journey commenced at the magnificent Dohány Street Synagogue, one of Budapest’s most iconic landmarks. It’s not just a place of worship but also a profound symbol of Jewish heritage. Exploring its rich history and architectural beauty was truly inspiring.

Hungarian National Assembly: As I continued my exploration, I marveled at the grandeur of the Hungarian National Assembly. This awe-inspiring building is a testament to Hungary’s rich political history and cultural heritage. As magnificient as it looked at daytime, it looked serene even after sunset.

St. Stephen’s Basilica: A visit to Budapest would be incomplete without experiencing the magnificence of St. Stephen’s Basilica. The view from the dome offers a breathtaking panorama of the city.

Hungarian State Opera: The Hungarian State Opera is an architectural masterpiece. Even if you don’t catch a performance, a tour of the building is a must to admire its opulent interiors.

Danube River Cruise: Budapest is famously known as the “City of Bridges,” and there’s no better way to appreciate its beauty than by taking a Danube River cruise. The illuminated cityscape at night is a sight to behold.

Shoes on the Danube River Bank: A somber stop at the Shoes on the Danube River Bank memorial pays tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. This moving art installation is a reminder of Hungary’s history during World War II.

Budapest Tabán: The Tabán district offers a charming contrast to the city’s hustle and bustle. It’s a peaceful enclave with picturesque streets and quaint houses.

Matyas Templom (Fisherman’s Bastion): With panoramic views of the city and the Danube, Fisherman’s Bastion is a fairytale-like structure that should not be missed. It’s a perfect spot for capturing postcard-worthy photos.

Szimpla Kert Ruin Bar: Budapest is famous for its ruin bars, and Szimpla Kert is a pioneer in this trend. Exploring its quirky, artistic, and laid-back atmosphere was a memorable experience. Luckily, my stay was just minutes walk from this ruin bar and after a couple of drinks, that is a luxury to be at!

Gellert Hill and Citadel Fort: To appreciate Budapest’s stunning topography, I ascended Gellert Hill to visit the Citadel Fort. The walk is rewarded with spectacular views of the city.

Széchenyi Thermal Bath: A trip to Budapest isn’t complete without a visit to one of its historic thermal baths. Széchenyi Thermal Bath offers a rejuvenating experience with its thermal pools and stunning architecture. Make sure to book your tickets in advance right here below :

Danubius Fountain: A visit to the Danubius Fountain, located in Erzsébet Square, is an ideal spot to relax and admire the surrounding architecture. It is located right in front of the Budapest eye and incurs no entry fee.

Budapest Eye: If you’re seeking a different perspective of the city, take a ride on the Budapest Eye. The panoramic views from this Ferris wheel are truly breathtaking.

New York Café: End your whirlwind day at the opulent New York Café, often referred to as the “Most Beautiful Café in the World.” Sipping coffee in this historic setting is a fitting way to conclude your 24-hour Budapest adventure unless you want to run to the highest rated gelateria in Europe.

Gelarto Rosa: For a sweet treat, I couldn’t resist indulging in Gelarto Rosa’s artisanal ice cream. Their unique rose-shaped cones and delightful flavors make it a must-visit for dessert lovers. 

Travel Tip: To maximize your exploration, I recommend getting the 24-hour Buda Pass for €30. This pass allows entry to a multitude of attractions and provides 24 hours of unlimited travel within the city. However, please note that it does not cover airport transfers, which can be purchased separately through the Budapest Go application or with cash on the bus for £5.20.
