Colomares Castle: A Fairytale Tribute to Christopher Columbus in Spain

Tucked away in the charming town of Benalmádena, on Spain’s sun-drenched Costa del Sol, Colomares Castle is one of the most intriguing and whimsical monuments in Andalusia. Despite its name, this is not a medieval fortress but rather a 20th-century architectural homage to Christopher Columbus, blending fantasy, history, and artistry in a single breathtaking structure.
A Monument Born from Passion
The castle was the brainchild of Dr Esteban Martín Martín, a Spanish doctor with a deep admiration for Columbus and his voyages. Built between 1987 and 1994, the monument was constructed almost entirely by hand by just three artisans, making it as much a labour of love as it is a piece of history. The design is a fusion of architectural styles, including Neo-Romanesque, Neo-Gothic, Neo-Mudejar, and Neo-Byzantine elements, reflecting the diverse cultural influences of Spain’s past.

Architectural Wonders and Symbolism
Every corner of Colomares Castle tells a story. Its towering spires, ornate arches, and intricate carvings celebrate Columbus’ epic voyage to the New World in 1492. The structure includes:
➡️ A replica of the three ships—the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María—crafted in stone.
➡️Symbolic references to the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, whose support made Columbus’ journey possible.
➡️A fusion of styles that pays tribute to Spain’s Christian, Moorish, and Jewish heritage.
