Aix-en-Provence, city of a thousand fountains
Founded by the Romans, Aix-en-Provence was still famous for its thermal springs. Aix-en-Provence is indeed the city of water, the city of a thousand fountains, as it is called.
The most famous fountain is the Rotunda Fountain (Fontaine de la Rotonde). It is located on the square from which Mirabeau Boulevard begins. Life is in full swing here: tourists and residents walk slowly, musicians play; hiding under the shade of plane trees, street shops and cafes are located.
Upon reaching the statue of King Rene, you can turn right and enter the sophisticated Mazaran district, built up with baroque mansions - the home of the aristocracy of the 17th century. The Granet Art Museum is located here, and next to it is the attractive Fountain of the Four Dolphins.
Turning left, you will see the narrow streets of the old town. They will lead to the Cathedral of the Holy Savior (St. Sauveur) - a unique building that incorporates the features of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture. Another church dedicated to Saint John of Malta is considered the tallest building in Aix - the height of its tower is 67 meters.
