Lipari is the largest and most accessible island in the Aeolian archipelago, serving as the main transportation hub and gateway to the other islands. With its charming old town, archaeological sites, and bustling harbor, Lipari offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

Named after the Roman god of fire, Vulcano, also known as the sulfurous island, is famous for its dramatic landscapes, and volcanic activity. Unlike traditional volcanoes that erupt lava, this one emits steam and gases known as fumaroles. The distinct sulfurous smell in the air can be quite intense at times, reminiscent of rotten eggs.

Dominated by its active volcano, Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Known for its regular eruptions and captivating sunsets, this island provides a unique opportunity to witness nature's raw power.

Renowned for its lush vegetation, fertile soil, and scenic landscapes, Salina is a tranquil oasis in the Aeolian Sea. The island is famous for its sweet Malvasia wine, caper cultivation, and picturesque villages overlooking the sea.

As mentioned above, Panarea is quite small so you can visit all on foot. It's car-free but you will find local taxis (white golf carts).

Alicudi and Filicudi are the least developed and most remote islands in the Aeolian archipelago. With rugged coastlines, pristine beaches, and unspoiled landscapes, these islands are a haven for nature lovers and those seeking solitude amidst breathtaking scenery.

Throughout the Aeolian Islands, you'll find a rich culinary heritage influenced by Sicilian and Mediterranean flavors. 

Here are some must-try dishes and specialties to savor during your visit:

Seafood: Given the islands' proximity to the sea, seafood features prominently in Aeolian cuisine. Indulge in fresh catches of the day, including grilled fish, seafood pasta, and traditional dishes like swordfish involtini and stuffed squid.

What is the best time of year to visit the Aeolian Islands?

The best time of year to visit the Aeolian Islands is during the shoulder seasons of April, May, and October. These months offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices, making it an ideal time to explore the islands without the peak season rush. 

1. Sun Protection: Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the strong sun rays.

While the Aeolian Islands offer a sense of remote tranquility, amenities and services can be limited, especially on the smaller islands. Be sure to book accommodations and transportation in advance, especially during the peak tourist season (July and August), and familiarize yourself with ferry schedules to avoid any unexpected delays.

Caponata: This Sicilian eggplant dish is a staple of Aeolian cuisine, featuring sautéed eggplant, tomatoes, onions, capers, olives, and vinegar. Served as a side dish or appetizer, caponata showcases the region's abundant produce and bold flavors.

Pane Cunzato: A beloved street food snack, pane cunzato is a hearty sandwich made with crusty bread, tomatoes, olives, capers, anchovies, and drizzled with olive oil. It's a perfect option for a quick lunch.

Malvasia Wine: Salina is renowned for its sweet Malvasia wine, made from grapes grown on the island's fertile slopes. Sample this aromatic wine, either as a dessert wine or paired with local cheeses and desserts for a delightful culinary experience.

Granita: Cool off with a refreshing granita, a Sicilian specialty made from flavored ice crystals. Popular flavors include lemon, almond, coffee, and wild berries, offering a sweet and icy treat during hot summer days.

Cannoli: No visit to Sicily is complete without indulging in cannoli, crispy pastry shells filled with sweet ricotta cheese and often adorned with candied fruits or chocolate chips. Look for freshly made cannoli at local bakeries and pastry shops for an authentic taste of Sicily.

Gelato: Treat yourself to creamy gelato made from fresh, local ingredients such as pistachios, almonds, and citrus fruits. Whether enjoyed in a cone or cup, gelato is a delicious way to cool off and satisfy your sweet tooth while exploring the Aeolian Islands.

Street Food: Don't miss the opportunity to sample Sicilian street food classics like arancini (rice balls filled with meat or cheese), sfincione (Sicilian-style pizza), and panelle (chickpea fritters). 

To reach the Aeolian Islands, you'll first need to arrive in Sicily.

You can do the hike independently. The panoramic views from the summit are unreal!

As soon as you arrive at the port of Filicudi, you'll be greeted by its renowned blue waters. 

Salina is the second biggest island of the archipelago, so you will need to rent a car or take the bus! You will find the bus stop on the right side of the port.

To reach Pollara, basically you can take the bus from Santa Marina di Salina that will head to Malfa first, and then change the bus from Malfa to Pollara. 

NB. Bus tickets can be made directly on the bus! Price is €2,40 (only cash). 

Lipari center is relatively easy to explore on foot, with its compact size and well-preserved historic center. To reach other parts of the island though, you'll need to rent bicycles, scooters, or take advantage of the local bus service.

The majority of lodging options are concentrated in Lipari Town, with convenient access to the ferry terminal and the historic center.

If you want to experience something unique and exclusive, I suggest to stay at Petricore, an ancient Aeolian house on top of Monte Rosa. 

If you prefer a more convenient place close to the port/town here are my other suggestions:

Vulcano Island isn't very small, but if you plan on visiting only the main attractions, they are all conveniently close to the port area. This means you can easily explore everything on foot! If you'd like to explore other parts of the island, you can rent open cars, bicycles, or quads here:

Inter-island transportation is mainly by ferry or hydrofoil, with frequent services connecting the islands. The main ferry companies operating in the Aeolian archipelago include Liberty Lines, Siremar, and Ustica Lines. Be sure to check the schedules in advance, especially during peak seasons, and consider purchasing tickets online or at the port in advance to secure your spot.

Once you’ve arrived at your chosen island, there are several ways to get around and explore:

	1.	Walking: Many of the Aeolian Islands are small enough to explore on foot, allowing you to soak in the picturesque landscapes and charming villages at a leisurely pace.

	2.	Scooter Rental: Renting a scooter is a popular option for exploring the islands, offering flexibility and ease of movement. You can find rental services near the ports or in major towns.

	3.	Public Transport: Some islands, such as Lipari and Salina, have local bus services that connect major attractions and villages. 

	4.	Boat Tours: For a unique perspective of the islands’ coastline and hidden coves, consider joining a boat tour or hiring a private boat charter. This allows you to visit secluded beaches and swim in pristine waters away from the crowds.

Direct Ferries 

If you're planning to visit Naples or if you prefer to skip the flight, you can also consider taking a train to Naples and then a ferry to your chosen island. During the summer months, SNAV hydrofoils connect Naples with the Aeolian archipelago, offering a quick and pleasant journey. From May to September, SNAV operates daily routes to Stromboli, Panarea, Salina, Vulcano, and Lipari. The journey can take from 4 to 7 hours, depending on the island you wish to reach.

This is the starting point. The visit will takes around 2 hours in total (depending on how many breaks you need to take). I suggest to start early in the morning.

3 days are enough to visit all of the island has to offer, but if you plan on using Panarea as a base to also visit other islands, extending your stay would be advisable!

Pasta alla Eoliana: Pasta that features local fresh products like cherry tomatoes, capers, black olives, and basil, all sautéed in extra-virgin olive oil. It's a delicious representation of the Mediterranean flavors found in the Aeolian cuisine.

But you need to know that it can only be reached on foot via a dirt path, and it is quite a challenge. If you plan on renting a car/scooter, the hike will takes around 25 minutes from the parking lot, otherwise it's another 20 minutes from the port. I did this every day and even tho it was challenging, it was absolutely worth it!

From Petricore you'll have one of the most beautiful views I've ever experienced! 

I'd suggest staying for at least 3 nights so you can also visit other islands during the day. Some islands, like Alicudi and Filicudi, are only accessible via a ferry from Lipari or Salina, so these are the two islands I would recommend visiting from Lipari.

How much should you stay in Vulcano island?

One or two nights are enough for the main attractions; three to four nights if you want to experience all the activities! I suggest visiting Vulcano as your last stop, so you'll be closer to Milazzo port.

Lipari: escursione al Monte Rosa Hiking trail in Marina, Sicilia (Italia). Download its GPS track and follow the itinerary on a map. Dal porto di Lipari inizia l'escursione verso il Monte Rosa.  Si percorre il lungomare in direzione di Porto Pignataro da dove si sale sulla strada asfaltata molto ripida che arriva in prossimità di alcune abitazioni.  Si continua sul sentiero ammirando sotto il panorama su Canneto. Si prosegue con alcuni sali scendi sullo sterrato per arrivare sul pianoro in vetta del monte Rosa dove è stata posta una croce in ferro.  Da lassù lo sguardo spazia sulle isole di Panarea e Stromboli e dall'altro lato sul paese di Lipari e su Vulcano.  In prossimità della vetta si trova la piccola chiesetta Esaltazione della S. Croce.  Si ritorna dallo stesso sentiero per arrivare a Marina Lunga a concludere la bella escursione poco impegnativa.
